Default New six-core Intel Core i7 970 3.2GHz and two new Intel Atom CPUs coming in Q3

Note : This post is not for competition

Intel is preparing a few new CPUs at the two extremes of their range – two new Atom CPUs and an Intel Core i7 with six cores. They have two things in common though – all three processors use DDR3 RAM and they are coming in Q3 of 2010.

The six-core Intel Core i7 970 is clocked at 3.2GHz, a bit lower than its Extreme counterpart – the Intel Core i7 980X, which runs at 3.33GHz. With Intel you always pay a premium for their Extreme CPUs, so I expect the price of the Core i7 970 will be much more manageable than the wallet-busting thousand dollar plus price of the 980X.

Anyway, the i7 970 packs hyperthreading, which works out to 12 logical cores. Like a good Core i7 it also offers Turbo Boost that ramps up the clock speed to 3.43GHz and the i7 970 works with 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. The TDP of the 970 is the same as on the 980X – 130W.

The Intel Core i7 970 is expected to launch the third quarter of 2010.

There are two Atom CPUs coming part of the Pine Trail line – the Atom N455 and the N475. The N455 is almost identical to the Intel Atom N450 – 1.6GHz clock speed and 5.5W TDP. The difference is the RAM – N455 uses DDR3.

The second CPU – the Intel Atom N475 – runs at 1.83GHz with slightly higher TDP of 6.5W. The two Intel Atom processors are also expected to come out in the third quarter of 2010. Now we have to wait and see if DDR3 will bring much of a performance boost to the Atom.
