Thumbs up www or without www | Google treats them as two domains

I read on an SEO forum that Google treats www.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com as different sites. The solution is to redirect your website to www or without www prefix. Please keep in mind that the redirection should be done on either of them, depending upon your backlinking practice. If your backlinks don't contain the www prefix, redirect the site to just yourdomain.com

It can be achieved through the .htaccess file or probably through the Google webmaster's tool to tell Google bots which one to crawl. (Not tried the second option)

    Even google.com redirects to www.google.com

I guess this is a news for our Admin. As http://www.indiabroadband.net doesn't redirect to http://indiabroadband.net or vice-versa. Latter URL treats me as a guest even if I'm signed in on the former.
    What you say?

yes, i learnt this long before because google's sites services adds www only when you change cname to www on dns.. so this meant that you add www than it will be a different thing..

Once you authenticate your site in Google webmaster tools there is an option to tell Google which is the right URL and Google will start showing your results with or without the www however you want Google to read it. Google treats indiabroadband.net and www.indiabroadband.net as seperate pages but as I have told Google which is the right URL and what I would like Google to read of it its all good. Untill about 3-4 years ago Google used to assign different page ranks to indiabroadband.net and www.indiabroadband.net but that issue has been resolved by Google now. some pages used to show up in serps with www and some without but thats history now and Google have become very smart thankfully.
I agree that indiabroadband.net should regirect to www.indiabroadband.net even though its got nothing to do with SEO any more. I will do that soon.

I might be wrong about this because I am toooo old skool and my knowledge about search engines can be termed as outdated.. I found out about the panda update today so you can imagine the extent I am out of touch with reality when it comes to search engines I have a lot of catching up to do.

    Experience speaks.

You're probably right. That's what I've read everywhere. Google Webmaster Tools can be used to achieve this.

OMG! You were not aware about the Panda update? hmmm... What's the Google analytics say about the traffic trend here after its release? One of the top blogs "Digital Inspiration" suffered loss in traffic initially. I don't know if it's back to normal. Just check and share with us when you've time.

I had a discussion with a member related to Panda update and article marketing here: SEO Techniques | It's all about publicity
