Thread: Usenet servers-better than torrents?

How many of you are aware of usenet servers? I tried to use the application from "Grab it". Those who have used it are aware of the charges levied by those servers. Is there any any servers offering free services?

What I need to know is.. What makes usenet better than torrents?
Users are requested to share your experiences...

The difference is the technology/methodology.

1. Usenet is typical client/server over the internet where as torrent is peer to peer.
2. Usenet servers host the entire file whereas in torrents peers (seeder) share either the bits and pieces or sometimes the whole file.
3. Usenet will allow download of the full file in one shot and very similar to downloading from any other website. The download speed will depend your BB speed.
4. Torrent speed depends upon the number of seeds and your own seeding.

One cannot say that usenet is better than torrent. It depends upon one's own point of view.

Basically both are usually involved in providing illegal/pirated suff. I am strictly against piracy and if I was asked to pay for pirated stuff, I will say "take a hike, my friend".

Well, its a client server model, doesnt this mean the user can download files available only in that server? I am searching for a movie, and maybe the server which I am paying for doesnt have that particular movie, but another server has? So, how can some one be sure with what server to go with?. Also, who uploads the contents?

Since this is very easily trackable,. unlike p2p, why doesn't the authorities crack down this system, and avoid promoting piracy? (pun intended)

as j4k mentioned usenet is about entire files..
its good for smaller files but about the way torrents handle files that are in GBs usenet wont work there.
