The best thing to do would be not spend any money atall on this machine and switch to Linux OS for the time being if he is not willing to buy a new one just yet.

Linux will take up a lot less resources and the same machine will feel faster then ever before... and thats if he is not already using linux

And save his money so he can buy a better machine in future

ohhh i can see that our admin is loving linux...

yes i was about to say this and this is the best thing you can advice to your friend is to switch to linux otherwise if he do not like linux or need windows only then windows 2000 can help a lot

Linux on 256 MB of RAM ? New versions of Linux recommends a minimum of 512 MB Ram. I think he should install Windows 2000.
Admin is right that rohitbarjatya's friend should start saving money and buy a new CPU all together.

Even Ubuntu would run well on this box.. 512 is recomended but you can strip down functions to make your experience better.

WHAT R U TALKIN ABOUT...........
just buy a new pc.
from what i gather u already have a monitor.
u will only need theese things--
a mobo, processor, min 512 mb ram,80gb hdd(get rid of the old one, u will see a huge increase in performance by shedding old hdd alone),smps, cabinet.
these days avg grade pc parts r so cheap that it wont hurt u at all.
SO GO FOR THE THINGS I SAID.
Have a good day.

I didn't say it dosen't run on such a machine. I just said that it'll be very slow.
Even opening a terminal might take around 5-10 seconds, don't even ask about firefox whihc would takes even more time, This makes it almost unusable.

I meant it runs without a hitch [lag]...... If it runs slowly try an older model of Fedora Core ......
