    Default Comp having hanging problems....

Hey all... so my friend has a comp which is now constantly having hanging problems, most of the times it hangs on the blue progress bar of xp, and does not go anywhere from there. Even if it does manage to get to the desktop it hangs there...
and since he doesn't know even a bit of computer hardware let alone software; all his problems are mine :16:

whats happenin is when it hangs, the hdd light stays on constantly. I'm guessing that this a hdd problem and not the ram? What are ur views and experiences?

    Its a p3, running on pc133 memory...

i'm having a headache now it just constantly gives him troubles and he in turn to me ...
    DON'T beam me up, Scotty!

Try booting it in safe mode(repeatedly Press F8 at startup) and feedback if it does log onto desktop... from there u can run an antivirus to make sure that its not a virus problem... after making sure that its not a virus problem... restore the system to the chkpoint(if therez any) where it was working properly...

I think the system is hanging because of the memory. Whats the amount of ram installed?

Try repairing the installation by a Win XP cd... If data loss isn't the concern clean format it and reinstall...

in such cases always remember to specify the processor, mobo and ram. neway, if the prob is not frm hardwares, a clean install of xp svc pack 2 will do the trick.do a full format of the current sys drive first.then install xp. if problem persists, then either the mobo is damaged or hdd got corrupt.call a professional to have a look.have a good day.

hard disk may have bad sectors, some OS files may not be booting
or it may be virus, try formatting ur friends system, if still it doesnt work, get a new hard drive...

Thumbs down your comp is not starting

When you switch on your comp keep on pressing F 10 button and then load maximum defaults and exit, your problem will be solved.

it sounds like a problem with hdd coz if hdd makes some noise at boot that means hdd is not working good..

    hey...
    perform Chkdsk to do this:
1: Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the C drive icon, choose "Properties".
2: When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section.
3: When that little window loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click on "Start Now".
4: A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer, so......Restart the computer. Error Checking will run automatically after the restart and it locks you out from doing anything until it's finished. It takes a little time to perform the task but after it's finished, it will restart into Windows automatically.

If you can borrow a HDD from a frd, you can try to install XP on it and then add your original HDD as a second drive and copy the stuff from it.

Later you can remove the Drive and clean image it or repair the Windows installation...

There is a better option- atleast better than the mentioned ones :P.
Google for orthos and run a blend test for around 4-5 hours. If the test fails and/or restarts- we have a hardware issue. The possibilities?
    Lets start from the basics:
Thermal paste. If the thermal paste dries up, they do more damage than good. Since he has a pentium 3, most probably the thermal paste isnt changed. To check the temps during blend test- download real temp. This will monitor your temps on the processor. Anything above 60 degrees celcius on load with ambience of atleast 30 degrees celcius is a concern.
Second reason could be the power supply. A power supply converts ac power into dc power- so it emits heat. Most probably the psu got lot of dust inside it that it must causing more heat.
Check both of this when you have the time. Let me know if you have done this. If its the thermal paste- I will explain you the proper procedure to safely remove the thermal paste and put a new one.
