AVI format is either DVix or Xvid. A DVD player capable of playing DVix/XVid should be able to play it.

Just create a standard data DVD. While playing the standalone player will scan the disk and you will get a text menu on the screen. The menu will display all DViX/XVid file (.avi). All other files will be ignored. Using the navigation keys you can traverse the files and play them.

You can even create folders like:

    <root>
    |
    +-- Movie 1
    |
    +-- Movie 2
    |
    +-- Movie 3

However, old generation players that do not play DVix will not be able to read this disk

If you wish to make a real Video DVD, then you will have to re-encode the AVI file to MPEG2 and create .MP2 files. And then using DVD authoring software such as Nero, you must create the Video DVD. It will create the DVD standard folders (VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS) and convert all .MP2 to .VOB. Also it will create the other files that are required by the standard DVD format.

    I use products from TMPGEnc.

    a) TMPGEnc Plus for encoding to MP2
    b) TMPG DVD Author for DVD authoring (really cool s/w, I can create motion menus with this)

If you want to play .avi files in your DVD player then you need MPEG-4 compatiable player. You can try nero express for this(no dvd menu though).

To do this Select Create Data DVD mode
    Add the avi files
before clicking burn OPEN THE SIDE BAR (middle left <| button of the window)
Check increase compatiability with MPEG-4 DVD players.....
    BURN.

You can also try Klite Video Conversion pack. Its a free video authoring tool.

However Cyberlink PowerDirector is probably the easiest and best DVD creating and editing software.

You did not read the previous post properly.

ShAdOwCoN wants to create a Video DVD and not a data DVD.

    thats why I said

    BURN.

Compatiable only with DiVX capable DVD players.

This option is only if writing files in.avi format is neccessary.

    Other wise
Nero Vision is required to automatically convert and write .avi files to VoB(mpeg-2) DVDs which can be played on any DVD player without MPEG4 or DiVX support. But size of disc becomes large. So thats one movie per disc at full quality.

BTW: if files are in Video_Ts folder in vob format + ifo file present then writhing the files in DATA mode is enough to make it compatiable with DVD players
