Ideal PC is very difficult to say - you can say optimum. By what is ideal or optimum today will become pretty much useless two years later, especially for gaming.
For todays' games, the recommended optimum config would be:
a) Core2 Quad
b) 3 GB RAM
c) 512 MB Graphics card
d) 20"+ TFT monitor
e) Good Sound Card with Good speakers

I disagree with one point
first the graphics card which should of 9 series atleast with 512MB of DDR3 memory
and you forgot to mention a good motherboard an SLI one preferably
Plz mention approximate budget because the cost os a good rig can go up to 1-3 lakhs
Mid Level Rig
Motherboard:MSI K9A2 CF @6k or Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI for 5.8k
Processor:AMD Phenom X4 9500+ -7.3k
RAM: Transcend 2x1GB DDR2 800MHz 1.6k
GPU: Palit HD4870 512MB GDDR5 SONIC @ 17k
HDD: Western Digital 500GB SATAII 3k
Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 330 1.7k
SMPS: Corsair VX 450W 3.9k
Optical Drive: Lite-On DVD-RW 1.2k
Speakers: Logitech X-230 2.6k
Monitor: BenQ E2200HD at 13k
Keyboard: any 500
Mouse: Logitech MX518 1.2k
for gaming rigs faster dual core(3GHz with same price as a 2.4GHz quad core) is more suitable because very few games currently are optimized to use all 4 cores.also graphics card should be atleast 9600GT for medium gaming but if you want to run CRYSIS at 4x antialiasing then be ready to spend ~11000 for a 9800GTX or ~17000 for a Radeon HD 4870(closest match to a GTX 280 with less than half the price)for even better performance.also always buy a good power supply(my suggestion is corsair HX 520W).my recommendation is(taken from DIGIT magazine nov issue "ask agent 001" coloumn):
Processor:core2duo E8400
Motherboard:abit IP35-E
Ram:Corsair 2*2GB DDR2 800MHz
Graphics card:Palit Radeon HD 4870 SONIC
Hard Disc:Western Digital WD50000AAKS
Cabinet:CoolerMaster CM690
Power Supply:Corsair HX 520
Monitor: Dell E22WFP
total is ~Rs.59000 but it should be lesser now.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
nice configs but its bit outdated now![]()
Woo, people wake up.
For playing the latest games in best possible resolution (Crysis anyone?) you need the following
Core i7 920 2.66 GHz Processor
Intel DX58SO LGA 1366 Intel X58 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 DHX 2x2GB DDR3 1333MHz TW3X4G-1333C9DHX Desktop Memory
nVidia GTX260 896MB or ATi Radeon HD4870 Dual Edition I GB DDR3
I will recommend the following
ViewSonic 22" VA2226W LCD Monitor
Cooler Master RS500-PCARA3 eXtreme Power Plus 500W Power Supply
This will allow you to play all the latest games. In case you want to play them with the highest settings possible then try the Core i7 Extreme Series, add on GTX280 in Dual or Triple SLI or HD4870 in Crossfire.
Regards
Graphic card is very important for game playing, such as
nVidia GTX260 896MB or ATi Radeon HD4870 Dual Edition I GB DDR3
You made the classic mistake .... bigger does nt mean better ...... Your graphic card should be 8 series
or you should go in for GTX 280/260
All Pc magazines [who have tested the cards thoruoghly ] will give you the same advice .....
The Gtx series follows a new architecture .... and gives better Price vs performance ratio than 9 series
Before u get confused GTX 2xx series is what should have been Geforce 10,000 series coming after 9000 series [but thats a funny name ]

As u can see GTX throws the best 9 series card out of the window .... performance wise
Guys, we have all given Sanjay our opinions. I feel we should ask him his budget first![]()

I know the config that I gave would not be less then 90K atleast. The question is how much can you afford to spend on a gaming rig.
Believe me when I say that sky is the limit. There are rigs out there which cost more then most big car's in India
Have a look at this Video Card NVIDIA Quadro FX4600, this range of cards goes up to 6 Lakhs
Think up a budget and then let us know. It will help you in getting the best value for money.
your previous rig should not cost more than 60 k ..... [i dont think u have any idea about the actual pricing of those components]
Processors are not very important , for gamers ..... Only Ram and Graphic cards ..... core i7 is simply not necessary
When people think of gaming rigs they think you need , latest components of everything .... but that simply is not the case ......
Also take into account the fact that Game devolopers make games only for the most likely used config .......
For Example
One of My friend has
2 Ghz Core2Duo processor
1 GB Ram
Geforce 8500GT 512 MB (rs 3k app)
With this config he can play Prince of persia TT , NFS Prostreet , FEAR , Call Of Duty 4 etc with maximum possible graphics
Crysis
My config
3 GB ram
Nvidia 8800GT
with this i can run Crysis 2 War Head at Maximum Graphics
Also Graphic heavy games like Assassin's Creed , Call of Duty 5 World at war etc

core i7 isnt required. just the mobo and cpu comes upto 33000. ati radeon hd4850 is more than sufficient to game at max on 1280×1024(res offered by most 17" and 19"). power supply of 600-700 watts is necessary for quad core cpu with a behemoth gpu like the hd4870. 450 watt wont suffice. a 64 bit os is required to recognise more than 3 gb ram. wait 4 phenom2 cpus frm amd.
a 32 bit OS like Windows vista recognises 4 gb ram but will only utilise 3 gb. By the way Core i7 is nehalem based on lga 1366 cpu socket. Mainstream cpus nehalem based will be seen in 2009 which fit it lga 1166 socket.

Well thats natural .... as i said before i have 3 Gb ram
1GB + 2 GB .... My OS recognizes 3 Gb of Ram but will utilise only 2.3GB of ram
same with 4 GB ... only upto 3.x Gb will be utilized
Sorry i meant Nehalem-C [Westmere] based processorsBy the way Core i7 is nehalem based on lga 1366 cpu socket. Mainstream cpus nehalem based will be seen in 2009 which fit it lga 1166 socket.
Ofcourse u can also wait for Sandy Bridge Based processors too
Does the op even have a budget or did just stir up a wasted conversation. Spending anything more than 50k for a gaming machine is wasted. As it is people do OC dram-fsb ratio, dram voltages, northbridge, sourthbridge, etc.
