    Wats r motherboards, and OS.

My opinion is tat the 2nd memory slot of ur mbd may be corrupted. And so it may not be working

Still can't exp why it shows up as 896 Mb. Are sure the ram frequency matches with ram frequency.

Also if you are familiar try checking ur bios options as well.

First check the second ram in another pc if it is available then check the MHZ like my 1gb ram is 666MHZ so both slots shold be of same otherwise it wont work.

    ok
i m guessing that u have an IGP. If thats the case, whats happening is that its dedicating 256MB (128 MB from each stick) for the graphics.
If u wanna free up some more RAM, go to ur bios, video controller, Memory, change to a lower value.

    else, i dunno :P .

check individual ram parameters ( latency-voltage-frequency-timings) by any system checker like "Everest" and post the data here.
also check all the slots by inserting each ram-modules and post here in case of any anomaly.
i can only give further info after learning about these.

try resetting ur bios, aslo if ur system is showing 896 then its only detecting one

do this to find the faulty part
take 1 ram and put it in the 1st slot- if works then fine
then put it in 2nd slot, - if works then then urs slots are fine

now tell us where u saw this total ram ??
if system properties, then try it in bios, or other system utilities

m pretty sure that the problem is not with the ram or the slots.
If there was, he would have issues worse than this, i mean he would get a lot of BSOD's .

also, 896MB, the figure itself can tell u that some amt of memory( ie 128 MB) is being used by other device. So, pretty sure that its the IGP that has taken the RAM space. I guess the person who had the problem is not an active user anymore.

Eg : this is what i get on my HTPC (pic attached)

this is when i hav put the IGP memory to 64MB.

of course the missing part is taken by onboard grafix chip , but what happened to the other 1gb. thats what we r tryin to figure out.

suggestion to rajan : please get rid of illegal stuffs from desktop before taking snaps it looks bad.

yeah, but while using both together one is not working, so there must be something wrong somewhere.
utorrent is all rite, but temporarily remove the torrents( rab ne..... ) in the future, for ur own good bro.

lol u saw in so much detail ... hehe did not expect it !

k man i shall do that. Btw rab ne is a gr8 movie (btw that was a song torrent not 4 movie).

getting back to topic : one is not working ??? he said 896 each naa ? i thought he put them both and he sees 896 in each (like it shows in cpuz ). If the total RAM he sees is 896MB then the problem has to be in either the slots or the RAM itself. Yes you r right buddy. My bad for incorrect understanding of problem.

Ram frequencys do not need to match

I use 2 sticks of different frequencies and different companies [Transcend and Kingston] and different memory capacities 1GB+2GB ...they work just fine

    It may work fine now.
but on long course it may create problems, when running some memory hungry applications, like sql server 2008.

No problem i use such apps like SQL server and MySQL and also others like Matlab and ofcourse Games !.... All these are resource intensive and they have nt created problems ..... its one and a half years old now

Actually it doesnt depend upon applications. It depends upon ur motherboard. Almost all new mobos supports ram modules with diff frequency. But older motherboards were not so tolerant. They didnt boot upon using such ram combination.

I know this from personal experience.
