Default Sony DRU 810A problems + what should i get?

Now its my dvd drive ,

Well whats happening with my sony burner is that firstly it never burnt any dvd at its full rated speed. But burnt well enough at slower speeds.

Now after about 2 yrs of usage, whenever i run a disc quality test, there is just no speed and there is a lot of jitter errors in the lower graph of Nero CD_DVD Speed.

The drive is able to verify all written data successfully and also is able to read all data successfully from dvds it wrote however the video dvds don't play well on the standalone.

Also its tray eject mechanism is completely out of order and i am tired of putting a screw into it everytime....

Has it reached the end of the line? The previous stock asus cd writer i had was not able to verify the written data when it died... so i am more confused.

Then if i decide i want to buy a new writer, i am just so confused with what brand to go for....

All samsungs i have seen randomly do not eject the tray on one button press.. (a thing which i am greatly turned off by )

LG drives seem to not be so advanced as the samsungs, if you go by their (samsung's) statements on the website.

    Already seen sony ....

I know this is the most common question here, and i have gone through many such threads here before posting this, But what should i go for?? Can some1 post about their own experience with samsung?
    I am extremely confused.

Also are pioneer drives available at delhi? specially the 115d (i think)

    Help me out please .

ok i have some info bout the writing of this samsung's particular model, and its good but not very good... i think lg has better writing perf...

If the drive is still able to burn dvds, then download and install IMGBURN and DVDinfopro. burn a dvd with it. generate graph data and open that with DVDinfopro, check for anomaly. or post the graph pic here.
however these are just basic procedures and doesnt help in repairing the drive, can merely point out the problem. U can consider it to be "gone with the wind". As for a new drive, I trust asus and asus only. These days the quality has also fallen far with the drop in dvd-drive prices. Most of them runs good for just a year and a half (if u use it very much). Still, i prefer asus. Samsung has the generic tray problems, lg doesnt last long, moserbaer-lyton is the worst drive ever made and dont know about the rest.

what about this one... eBay India: Liteon 20X Dual Layer 8.5 GB DVD RITER 1 Yr Waran vat4% (item 120353146233 end time 28-Dec-2008 21:13:02 IST)

and incidentally i can't find any person with tray problems with samsung on other forums of outside india

lol this smilie has come up in it

and lol more, i recommended sony in one thread here ... my bad! sorry...

but TTYTT, the tray stopped ejecting when the drive crashed down to the ground an year back cause of me, with the tray open , so i cant blame it for that, the drive never gave any errors on the comp so i cant deny that it does write and must have some pretty good error correction to read the junk it writes :P

what blokes sell on ebay... they cant even spell 'writer', it must even be written on the boxes

this is no diffrent from moserbaer liteons... lol...

i checked ur link. it seems to be the original liteon drive which we cant find in stores now(at least not here in kolkata). all we get is moserbaer-liteon drives which three of my friends bought and threw away before even 11 months (its true). all of them lost 1200 bucks and now tells me what a fool they have been not to buy the asus drive i recommended.
Now, all these drives available in india are from different countries/factories. Some seem to be good and some horrible. Take ur case, ur sony drive lasted at least for 2 years. My sony cd-rom which i bought 10 years back with some 4000/- (dnt remember correctly), used to run for 1 month and then i had to send it to bangalore service-centre. it always came back after 2months and ran for a month, then again back to bangalore. after this happened thrice, i lost my patience and smashed it on my lawn again and again until it was broken into molecules. I never adviced any of my friends any sony product since.

so i think its just a random game of poker with these drives... ... i will just get a samsung one (i think) and keep my fingers crossed with the tray problem ... will take special care never to bump it or something...

leo is the pioneer 115d available in india?

not goin for asus cause my stock one went kaput in only an yr, during my noob days when i dint used to write much cds...

no i've changed my mind and i'll buy an lg... and keep fingers crossd with its life... at least if it dies fast i'll not hang around with using pins n what not... will just get a new one then.

i dont think its available in india, never seen myself. pioneer is mostly popular for car music systems here in india. though i found a copy of 110d in the website nehru-place. i m not very fond of that website so not sure re bhai.
i can give u the only reasonable advice. since quality of a same product seems to vary in diff states, its best if u consult this matter with some one who lives near you. then u will have a clear picture of the brands found at ur locality. i think its the best idea because i dont think buying optical drives over net is a very good idea.

i just discovered the dru 810a is a rebadged benq 1650 or 1640... these drives were very good... now m thinking maybe its the samsung standalone thats dying... and the cheap write media causing the jitter errors?

but what the hell to do about the tray

o no i'm gonna buy it on the net ...

LG is a very wise choice, its second best (after asus) in my book. use it as much as u want, because things dont last very long these days.
another thing, use the writer only for copying, writing, installations etc but never watch a movie directly from it. copy the film to hdd(will take only 5 min) then watch it and delete it. its best because u wont have to run the writer for 1.5 hour straight (in case of hindi flick its 3 hrs straight ).

ur mind is like a pendulum, u know that !!!

i just carried out the test and found that its writing normally !!!!! the amount of jitter is normal for any drive... there are no pi failures and pi errors r also normal for writex i think

will any repair guy be able to fix the tray?? seems i was about to make a big mistake throwin it away! and that too after so many burns its still performing well! see its good to be geeky sometimes

just talkd to the cc, they told me it cannot b repaired from their sc... they don't directly sell drives in india... its through Rashi peripherals.

and they r located at nehru place which is jus a very long dist from my place.

    now what?

I trust "Rashi peripherals" very much.
Now, if u can find a trust-worthy place then go and get the drive repaired there but if not, go for rashi. U dont have warranty left, do u ???
then it doesnt matter. try to find a good place nearby and get it repaired from there.

warranty's long gone ... k i'l go tomoro check out a few places.

i wrote a cd yesterday at its full rated speed, it wrote perfectly without errors... i think it'l go on forever ... and i also think that the errors (a ring on the dvd burn side when written at top speed) it gave me when i bought it were cause i then had only 256mb of memory and used to use norton at the time .

and now its out of my cpu so cant really test burning any good dvds now...

after wasting 2 hours trying to find out a place to have it fixed today... i found 2 place but one was going to close up and not willing to even look at the drive, the other one's mech had gone out and was returnin only after hours...

i just came back and opened it up... found the band somewhat greasy, so cleaned it up thoroughly, then lubricated all but two sliding parts with petroleum jelly,
AND FIXED TO A GREAT EXTENT ... the tray always comes out while there is a disc in it, and comes out without a disc as long as its been used in the past 2 mins, else it ejects on 2 presses.

looks like if i greese those two other parts too it will be quite fixed .

but as i dont have a solder rod i'l have to get the LED soldered elsewhere... but this is minor stuff.

Thanks you ... i will return the favour

    but can't for now

    Update

looks like i was happy too soon ... now the drive tray wont stay inside, everytime it goes in it comes right out, without reading anything ... the exact opposite of its previous behavior

now m just done with it... a perfect drive going to waste because of its tray mechanism... high time these makers recognize these shortcomings... :52:

either follow j4k or go back to the repairman again bro. it may cost u 100 rs petrol money but will save u 1200rs on new dvd writer. at least when repaired, u can use it as a backup drive.

k guess i'l go to the repair shop... i'l just let him keep it too if he asks for a day or two... what have i got to lose?

anyways if it cant b repaired i'l just buy a samsung 202 or 203 (with a pata converter)... at least they have a long life. its my final decision.

i guess the 202 only would do.. why shud i go spending another 500 on the converter ...
