Default Unique Problem while Shut downing the PC

I am facing a unique problem while Shut downing the PC. When I try to shut down my PC (I click on Start & then Turn off computer), the computer gets hanged. I am not able to do anything. (This happens only when the PC is on for a long time). Then I restart my PC.

Then again when I click on Start & then Turn off computer (after restarting), there's no problem in shut downing.

I face this problem in shut downing only when I try to shut down my PC after its on for a very long time.

No i mean windows update, sometimes windows bugs can cause such problems. Or it could be due driver issues.

Try to remember if you have recently updated your h/w drivers or installed any new s/w or changed any system setting.

Any of the above factors could cause your system to crash.

It is recommended that you do that regularly.
I was also like you during my earlier days.
But, came to learn the lesson soon.

You can do all that either automatically (Using Automatic Windows Update) or you can do that manually by going to Microsoft Update site.

Just open your Internet Explorer and click on 'Windows Update' in 'Tools' to go to the site, and the rest you can understand and do for yourself.

Oh u still using XP SP2 , i would advise you to upgrade to XP SP3 , or atleast you could install other updates excluding XP SP3 from windows update in the manual method mentioned above by dhanesh

But, I have heard that many bugs of SP3 have still not been fixed.

P.S. : I have SP3 installed in my system, and didn't get any problem.

But, there is nothing much to worry about that because, we can just remove it with the 'Add or Remove Programs'.

i know u can do that if u install using the standalone exe from MS. Does it work the same way if you install from windows update website ?

yes there were so many problems with xpsp3, most of the problems are fixed now and xpsp3 is much more stable. I really don't advice to update to sp3 better idea is to use sp2.

If you have tried system restore then you can try to disable all unnecessary items from system services (using msconfig)
    msconfig
    start>>run>>type msconfig in run box
    then go to services tab
    tick hide all microsoft services
and then click on disable all (make sure tick mark is there in hide all microsoft services option)

    then press OK
it will ask you to restart
    restart and check

It must have been a bug in the windows file, you have to update windows or try to reinstall the faulty OS again.

Many say that they hear Satanic messages when they play the Windows Installation CD back.
    That's nothing.
It installs Windows if you play it forward.

The reason why I did not go for the SP3 was I heard there were several issues in that. & even few of my friends had faced issues after installing SP3.

And regarding the automatic updates, this is my current settings. Is this ok?

Yesterday I had restored my system. Let me see if I face any issues today.

The problems, if any, occured to very few people, and personally i feel its worth the risk (ofcourse i have lots of time too repair it too )

Anyways lets hope your system is alright now
