Default Dont yell at ur hard drive !

    Found this.

Don't Yell at Your Hard Drives: Sun Engineer
No, seriously don't. An engineer at Sun Microsystems' Fishworks lab discovered that yelling at your hard-drive causes sharp (yet momentary) increases in the hard-drive's latency. The engineer demonstrated this by yelling a portion of a server holding a RAID JBOD array, while monitoring its IO/s and latencies of the drive he was yelling at it. Each time he yelled at it, there was a surge in the drive's latency. The engineer posted his demonstration on YouTube. Now you know that yelling at your hard-drive isn't going to help, or is it? This opens up some interesting topics to research on, of how the rather loud environment enterprise hard-drives are put through in high-density storage environments impact on them, and to what extant vibration dampening helps them. Moral of the story: When angry at your computer, don't yell at it. They have feelings too

Does anyone yell at their harddisks? I know even i have been on tougher times maintaining computers and networks at office, but i have never yelled at the hardware, only at the people who operate them

I have never yelled at anyone, Machines or Humans.
But I have beaten them (especially CPU) many times, when not working.

^^ I presume u must be knowing that such beatings on the cabinet may sometimes bring adverse effects. Major components can get loosened up. Also the soldering may break in certain extreme cases.

I know. But, I have seen the magical effect of this trick.
    It's a temporary solution.

I had a Samsung CD Writer and it's CD tray was always stuck. That was my reason for hitting the Cabinet.

LG DVD writers have facility to upgrade the firmware with the help of an utility. Does Samsung OD have such facility? Maybe upgrading the firmware might be of some help.

i guess updating the firmware is available in all the drives.....but if u updated it with a uncompatible version than just forget about ur Writer or whatever it is.........

The whole process is automatic with LG Updater. Just run the software, it will access the drive, find information about it and then search for appropriate firmware drivers in the database and finally downloading and installing them. Am unsure about Samsung Drives though.

It's not the problem of firmware. It's a problem with the CD/DVD Tray or the motor.

It's possible to upgrade Samsung CD/DVD writer firmware. You can download the firmware upgrade utility from Samsung official website.

But I don't think it will solve this problem.

Did some research of my own and it seems this has been termed as standard illness of all Samsung Drives after an usage period of 3-4 years.

The read/write mechanism in any HDD is just micrometers from the HDD platter. Hence minor shocks will be tolerated (as HDDs are designed keeping that in mind), but major shocks will cause both of these (read/write mechanism + platter) to touch each other and it may lead to problems.

is there any way of repairing a problem in a hard disk, like the unallocated sector count problem, which i am facing??
could it have been due to external pressure??

We use something termed hdat2 to repair the HDD. It has been found to be effective but the only gripe is that it will take forever to scan and repair a HDD. In the office, we just run the software on the pc to which the HDD is connected and keep it some safe place like server room. Progress is checked daily and by the end of 2-3 days it should be fixed. The PC runs non stop during this period.

The problem mentioned by u can be caused due to various factors such as improper partitioning, faulty formatting, improper shutdown as well as mechanical forces such as uneven pressure.
