| Yes i was gonna ask the same. True HD TV's cost a hell lot more, would it be worth the cost ???? I had gone to the Sony show room today, their Full HD series strts with 63K for a 32" . But i m guessing other Brands are cheaper ?? Their Bluray players were so bulky and hot, EXPENSIVE, i felt that every thing in that room was not worth it. All that for a movie...... can go to gold class for every movie and still end up saving !! |

You can go Gold class but having your own HD Home Theater is something at a different stratosphere. As the classic tag line says - There are some things that are beyond money.

| Have u hear abt LED displays ?? I think its a different thing. LCD are to be replaced as the emit very harmful gases. Chk these out: Freescale and Samsung to Collaborate on LED Display Technology - X-bit labs Hands-on with Samsung LED and LCD displays - Home Video News - Digital Trends They are INSANELY expensive. They did show one of these on NDTv. @J4K 1 more question, Even good comp speakers have an output of 300W RMS (max i have seen) . But even low end Home theaters are equipped with speakers that are 400W RMS (in mid range 20K sony u get 1000W RMS ones too) . So, can u plz tell what is the real significance of the RMS rating is ??? And for an HTPC build what speakers shall i go 4 ?? I was gonna get Altec lansing FX5051. Its only 89W RMS. Will it be enough for a modest theater or is it totally insufficient ? Last edited by rajan1311; 01-30-09 at 12:07 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| Platinum Member | @rajan3111, The first thing you must do is chuck all power ratings out of the window, i.e., do not go by RMS values along (PMPO should not be believed at all). First determine the size of the room and speaker placements. If you are going to place all speakers round the HTPC and sit at a distance of 3 ft., then you do not need a high powered sound system. Such a system will be detrimental instead. On the other hand, if speaker are going to be placed at four corners of the room and picture displayed on a largish TV, your sitting position at least 10 ft away, then you do need a powerful amp. If the room is 12x10, a rating of 55W RMS per channel will do. You could go higher also. My own HT room is 15x10 and I think I already mentioned the rating of my amp/spk earlier. My suggestion is - do not go for something in between. If you are a little tight on the budget and if you are going to watch movies on PC alone, and you will be sole audience, then a small system is sufficient. I will also advise against buying an all-in-one system like those advertised by Sony, Philips, Samsung, etc. Too many compromises are made in such a system to keep the price down. The worst compromise is on the speakers. They tend to make the speakers output more bass. The amp is also non-linear and THD is high while SNR is low. Plan and wait like 5+ years, the way I did (read my guide - not bragging but simply stating the satisfaction of the whole experience). |

| I do not have much knowledge abt speakers and amps. I want something in the range of max 25-30K. Plz, send me the details of the speaker system and amp i should go 4. But, will i be able to connect it to my HTPC and get 5.1 on games too ?? The speakers are going to be 3-4 Feet away frm the sweet spot. I shall blindly buy what u say. PS: I will never spend more than 30K. Last edited by rajan1311; 01-30-09 at 08:28 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
