Default Problem with Palit HD 4850 Sonic

    Bought a new PC....

    AMD Processor
    Asus M3A78-EM
    Palit Ultracool 4850
    Cooler Master Extreme power 600W
    Cooler Master cabinet 334 Elite.

Now real bad news is this m\c gives a new problem.

Sometimes, when I press power button to switch on computer, some noise is coming out from Graphics Card. No display is coming to Monitor.
Whenever this noise comes, no display, computer does not boots up.
    Otherwise works fine.
These probelm does not happens every time. happen some time.say 4 cases out of 10.

One thing may happen because due to some extra cooler, GPU sometime gets loose as this MB does not have any extra clip in PCI slot. This is my notion.

    Any idea guys...

    Thanks

noise from graphics card strange ... it may sound silly .... but you just may check for once if some wires or something small is stuck in the graphics card fan ...

    Noise ?? hmmm........
Chk that ur fan connection is ok. That is the only noisy thing. Also, keep ur comp horizontally and see if u get the prob again. If u dont, then u know its the cards thats lose. Will look 4 more info.

Btw which processor did u go 4 ?? How is the comp overall ?? Wats ur RAm and stuff ?

I think he is talking about the noise of the fan. The speed of the fan is regulated depending upon the load and the heat being generated. Hence the hine increases/decreases.

go return the mobo if it does not have a pci-e clip. It SHOULD have one. So what ur saying is that u dont get video at times ??? Keep the case horizontal and see if u have that prob.
A fren of mine had a similar prob, but his comp used to boot without video.

Check if you get display without the Video Card.

    Update the Drivers

Ensure that SMPS is working fine and is correct for your setup.

Finally if nothing else works get your mobo/Videocard tested by an expert for hardware issues

CM 600W extreme, in reality, is a low end version of seventeam 500w OEM. The efficiency is 70% but its tested on operational temps of 25 degrees celcius. The psu can barely cope up to 400w. To add more, it has passive pfc and a really bad cooling. You psu just choked your card to death. Even if you do change the psu, there's a possibility that the damage might allready been done and its not necessarily because on the GC, could be on the rams and/ on the hard drives. The gpu should not come at all cost, you need to make sure the card is inserted properly and that plastic lever secures the card. Improper installation can be fatal.

I have the same PSU. Yea its low end but its more than enough. A 450W PSU is what is recomended for a HD4850. But that is when u have a full high end PC.

Passive cooling ?Mine has a 120mm fan.

But yes, if the card is lose, thats a big problem.

    Thanks Every One.

I have checked the Palit HD 4850 Sonic GPU in their Service center.
They said that GPU is OK. But I have to change my PSU. I have to take
Tagan or Corsair PSU. Right now I have CM Extreme Power 600W.

Now regarding GPU, when it creats problem, M\C get booted. I get the
sound of OS booting. But no display is comming. This is not happening
    everytime.

But 600W should be fine for my System.
Any changes required in BIOS???? Anything I have missed????? I am going with Almost default bios setting other than Boot configuration stuff.

    MOBO is Asus M3A78-EM.

    My Total Configuration:

AMD Phenom 9550 (Plz Don't make any Comment. I have made a mess here.)
    Asus M3A78-EM
    Palit HD4850 Sonic 512MB
    Cooler Master Extreme power 600W
    Cooler Master cabinet 334 Elite.
    Corsair 4GB 800MHz

    Thanks

Thats weird man. I have same PSU but no probs.

But sry for the problems dude.
and its ok, ur CPU is gr8. Dont regret anything. When u wanna change it, i will buy it second hand frm u.

avoid bios flashes. If u get it wrong, ur system will never work.

btw, no BIOS flash is needed.
You would have required a flash if u had a Phenom 2.

    none i can think of.
Just see that u have a pci-e clip. make sure that the card is properly mounted on the slot(case slot). Did u try keeping the case horizontally ???

I said Passive pfc. I have made a post here regarding psu guide:
http://www.indiabroadband.net/deskto...ply-funda.html (The supposedly guide to the power supply funda)
Although I have put this on many Indian tech forums, I am unable to edit the first post so waiting for mod's reply for that.
@ OP: I could explain you all over again to what I normally do in other Indian tech forums which is repeated redundantly. I hope this is something which you or other extreme psu user would go through:
Issue with Palit HD4850 Sonic - Digit Online Technology Discussion Forum
My point comes in second page, which apparently was the issue- despite other people's theories and criticisms. :P

There's no standard labelling procedure being put by any national or international bodies. Only the ethical review sites like hard ocp, hardware secrets and couple of more. However even they succumb to use their reviewing skills as advertisement as well- like anandtech. But one can easily spot if one is a regular reader. Ideally a psu needs to be tested on a load tester where you can input the values of each rails manually and that will stress the psu. An oscillope is used to see if there's any voltage ripple. More explanation is given on the psu guide. Testing a psu using a rig and ocing it wont give you any clue. It takes time for the main caps and electrolytic caps to die- sometimes a month or else as high as 1 year. In any ways in between spikes and ripple do go off the chart- hence certain problems like rams, hard drive making noise, system's fan is going fast and making more noise as soon as you start.

Take the usual precautions while updating the BIOS. One wrong move and the board may get damaged permanently. Do it at only when the need is at hand.

The problem maybe with the PCI-E slot of your board. The onboard GPU does not need the PCI-E slot to function correctly..

Bro u said that ur GPU is fine on an anither machine, what PSU did that other machine have ??

SMPS is also fine. I have exchaged old CM extreme power with new corsair 650 TX.

One clip is their in PCI slot. I find it out.

PCI - E slot may be a problem.
But when I am getting display with GPU, then their is no probs.

Problem is the display not comming from the M\C booting. If display comes at booting, then there is no probs. M\C is running fime thereafter upto shutdown.
That is why I am not sure that problem is with PCI-E slot or not.

Any idea, that how can I verify that there is any problem with PCI - E slot.

There are some service centers who look into motherboards and fix minor niggles such as these. The slot maybe non functional, and hence may cause the error mentioned. If there are such motherboard service centers, u can try giving them the board to be looked into. I am not speaking about the official service centers. These are centers which specialize in motherboard repair.

My M\c is Brand new. Only 1.5 week old.
I hope I can take that to Asus Service center.

Any idea how Asus deals with damaged MOBO (Within Warranty)???
