    Default problem with new comp :(

    well i bought my CPU on oct 2008 having the following config -
    procc - Q6600
    MB - DG35EC
    RAM = 2gb 800mhz (hynix chipset)
    gx = HD4670 (this one is 1-2 months old)
    HDD = 160gb sata

    now the thing is yesterday i was playing simcity societies, then i exited the game, & started browsing. suddenly the display of my monitor went off though my CPU was running (couldnt get it if it restarted or something else), so then i turned it off & again started it after 5 mins, it was running for few mins & again the same thing happened. 1st i thought it was my monitors problem (which is nearly 4 yrs old, samsung 17" crt ), but after checking it in neighbours house i found it working correctly. now yesterday i was running computer for a long time, for about 6 yrs then gave 1 hr break then again started it for 2 hours. then this thing happened. now i want to know the possible reasons behind this. so please suggest the possible reasons about this incident.

    This happened to me too (old comp) when i played games like Age Of Empires for too long

    Think your gfx card may be overheating

    what are you trying to do , finish his computer for good

    if it was a bios problem then it wont take 6 hours for it to bust his system

    i think its some heating issue

    yeah, i guess ur right shadow, i forgot the time issue,

    and i thouht of the over heating issue as well, so i suggested to try vga, he said it worked for 8 hrs, then went off, so ,if its the processor then the whole sys should go off naa ?? not just the display

    Which power supply?
    Are you using a surge protector/UPS by any chance?

    Most probably that either damaged the ram/hard drive or the graphics card. Even if you buy a new psu you will still have to get the issue fixed. However its best if you change the power supply first before anymore possible damage happens. Since you bought this on october 2008, you should have invested in a much better supply as you have invested as high as 11-12k just for the freaking processor. corsair vx450 in those days was as cheap as 3.2k but now its as high as 3.9- 4.2k

    Like i said before i have had this problem

    i can confirm that its not a ram issue , because

    -> when ram goes bust the cpu is on and monitor goes blank BUT this happens right when you power on your system not after 6-8 hours

    Hard Drive

    -> If hard drive were damaged you cannot boot into the OS .... ur sys wont work

    -> If only a few sectors of your hard drive were damaged ..... your game would exit and system will restart or hang ... Monitor wont go blank

    I dont think there was any hardware damage because of your PSU .... though i suspect your system is a little under powered by ur PSU

    i think either your processor or Graphics card ( or both) is overheating... it summer after all .....

    the same thing happened to me in my old comp when i was using a 64mb gfx card and samsung crt monitor ....

    What happens is that .....

    1) The monitor goes blank NOT OFF

    2) The side LED light starts blinking

    In samsung crt monitors you have a LED light near the ON button ... this starts blinking when the monitor is ON but CPU is not connected to the monitor .....When it is connected it stays ON continuously and does not blink

    3) CPU is still running

    well i also think that the main problem is either my grfx or procc is getting over heated & ya im trying to get a better psu. btw i dont think that my sustem is underpowered by my psu, as i tested my psu & found out that its supplying around 480W (though its having a label of 600W on its body :P )

    You cant test a psu with a multimeter or others devices though, you will need an oscilloscope and a load tester which stresses all the rails on advertised specs. Ofcourse no1 does that in India- and I seriously doubt the hardware reviewers do the same thing.
    Well...if you really want to test the system's stability, google and run orthos for 5-6 hours. Be advised that this is a stress testing software and the system will run on 100% load. If the psu gives a large spike, your system will be damaged. Giving the power is one thing, Voltage ripple and stability is a different ball game. Dont expect a 400w psu with 20-22AWG wiring on +12v rails with substandard main caps and non japanese electrolytic caps to run a current system/graphic card system properly. Things dont work that way- more advance a hardware goes more sensitive it becomes to voltage ripple and spikes. Power supply is also one of the generic reasons of a temperature increase.
    Necessary advice is given. If you are testing the system with orthos for 5-6 hours with the same power supply- I salute you for your bravery.

    ok if you have done that then u can be sure its a heating problem ... u can just buy and apply cooling creams like Arctic Ice which are available for 100-200rs .... apply it and see if u face the same problem after long hours of gaming

    google it for more info on application procedures
