Default Want to use computer during monsoon.

Hi,

It is rain with thunder showers outside. I want to use my computer. Is there any safe method ? I can manage without internet. My UPS is APC and has surge protection. Modem does not have back up. If you know any method using which I can use my desktop during the rain and thunder, please share.

It is back again. Has to shutdown.

Thanks in advance.

all sorts of protection are useless against a direct lightning strike but chances of that happening to you here in india is very rare.a good UPS coupled with a surge protector which you already had is good for all practical situations but as i said before useless against a direct lightning strike, say,on overhead electrical lines or your home.

LIGHTNING AND SURGE PROTECTION
Quote:
The first stroke of lightning during a thunderstorm can produce peak currents ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 Amperes with rise times of 1 microsecond. It is hard to conceive of, let alone protect against, such enormous magnitudes. Fortunately, such threats only apply to direct hits on overhead lines. Hopefully, this is a rare phenomenon.
an interesting observation:--

I'll say it again. There is no electrical protection against lightning strike, other than unplugging the stuff from the wall.
Sometimes not even that - I've seen (yes seen) a direct hit to the house jump the 10 centimeter air gap from the phone socket in the wall down to the unplugged modem cable lying on the ground, frying the modem nonetheless. Scary
the above statement may seem unrealistic but it is possible.a typical lightning bolt has capability to ionize even air.

Its safe to switch off computers and don't forget to remove all power cords while heavy thunder rains are going on. better be on safer side than regretting latter.
