bit torrent is best as it don't have ads, visit torentz.com .. download a torrent file and open that torrent file in bot torrent, it will automatically start downloading, more the number of seeders & leechers, more will be the download speed.if more people download a same file, then its good, its actually a sharing concept.

No, the concept is not illegal, and the "illegal things" that are shared using torrents are what makes us call most of them "illegal".

    Torrents are not illegal.

OK, so the concept is not illegal. But what is being shared is illegal?

Most of the things that are being downloaded via torrents are illegal, illegal software, music, movies etc. What they mean is "copyrighted" material. The pirates are saying " It is not illegal to share copyrighted material between friends". The arguments are going on and on. You have to decide which side you are on before you start downloading.

Correct Farce. Torrent and torrent clients are not illegal. What is shared may be illegal.

It is perfectly legal to share your personal photographs, documents, content, creations - everything that you own. It is illegal to share someone else's content, e.g., movies, music, software, etc.

Got it. Thanks everyone for the explanations. Haven't
gotten into it yet. I have very little time to watch
    movies these days anyway ;-)

But torrents are also used by a small minority to download legit stuff

for example Torrents are the best place to download new Linux Operating Systems

one of its advantages is that its very stable ..... u can resume a download even after a crash

BTW Farcy i would advice you not to Torrent illegal stuff .... if i dont remember your ISP is Comcast right ?

They tend to monitor Torrent users and serve infractions to those who are caught downloading copyrighted stuff .... one of my relative there who uses comcast was served a warning+Threat of disconnection

^ Yeah...MPAA and RIAA will smack you (any one using comcast) on the back side if you use torrents to download movies and music.

Torrents are the way forward in peer to peer sharing.
The torrent you downloaded is a tiny file (about 1 kb or 100kb, right?)
What this does is link you to all the other people on the network with the same file.
You need to open it with Utorrent or BitTorrent or something similar to that

    Starts with an example
If someone has the whole file, and this whole file (movie, eboook, software etc ) is split up into peices (say 10 pieces)

Then ten people connect to this network.
This master server uploads one peice of the file to each of the people that connected.
Then everybody has one peice. After this, the master servers job is completed and will not be in picture.

Then each of the people exchanging the pieces of fie each other and the process keep on going till everyone has all pieces

In this method server is not fully used. The role of the server is comming on initial stage only.

This is why torrents are usually slow to start with but pick up huge speeds later on and slow down again at the end, as at first, you don’t have many pieces to swap, and the last pieces are slightly harder to come by.

These are the basic terms used in torrent:

    Seeders > uploader
    Leechers >>> dowloaders
Peers>>> how many ppl are downloadingand uploading
    source google
