Default Connecting Lap HDD to Desktop

    Techies I need your help.

I just got my lap repaired and have replaced the HDD. Now,
I have a 40 GB Toshiba HDD and now i want to connect it with my desktop.
I have some data in it so i want to recover it. I can open the lap itself and attach and try but the problem is only sometimes it will detect not always so i cant keep on opening the case and attach it.

Now i want a connector or converter using which Lap HDD can be connected to the Desktop.

    Any ideas ?

U can get an 2.5" HDD enclosure . It will cost around 500.

It will convert ur HDD into a USB external HDD.

Just checked, the lap HDD has the exact same number of pins as desktop IDE drives. and has 4 extra pins for the power.

Now any idea on power connection ?
as in desktop HDD. The power cable will be Red,Black,Black,Yellow left to right.
now in this HDD its 4 pins are in square structure so

Ya for that i already have so was thinking to attach for that only
so now i need power connection info

    ^^ It is a 3.5 inch case!

I am using a 160 gb internal Laptop HDD(2.5") as external for more than a year now. You will get the casing/enclosure within Rs.200.

No external Power will be needed. The Hdd will get power from USB.

You Laptop HDD has pins for Power??

    ------------------------------------

A second option other than the casing/enclosure is this:

A simple IDE to USB cable.

it seems that its normal for laptop drives to have those 4 extra pins !! i didn't know that.

    Just checked this site:

There is absolutly nothing on it. No info about anything as master or slave and i dont think there will be option for that as here HDD will directly fit in the Lap in master or slave slot (if any coz some old laps like mine is like that).

I considered that as power because when i saw the other pins its exactly as the desktop IDE pins means 1 pin gap in the middle. so i thought its same as desktop HDD and was assuming it would be power.

hmm thats interesting as here on the HDD about power it is written as DC +5V 0.7A
now if those 4 pins are not power then from where do the HDD get power ?
because in IDE cable all 40 pins will be data exchange and if i connect that cable then there will be no power for this so it wont work now

Those 4 pins may be for Power, but you wont need anything to connect to them if you use the external casing/enclosure.

This is my 160 gb laptop internal Hdd with SVB Casing. All you need is the casing and a USB to mini-USB cable. Look carefully, those 4 pins are not connected by anything.

There is no need of any external power supply in case of Laptop Hdd.
