| Platinum Member | So i cannot run or download any installer packages! When i download any such exe or msi package, it immediately gets cancelled in some milliseconds on firefox. When i try to run such a package (which was already on the hdd), a message pops up, "Windows cannot find specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"! I'm running as an administrator! Even the run-as command gives the same output. I can however download and run any other file like an avi or zip. I have never encountered such a problem ever... I did run windows update last night. |

| if it gets cancelled then obviously the installers in HDD (downloaded) won't work. try copying the direct link to those installers and download them using your download manager (the exterior one, not the one in FF). some screenshots of the errors please. p.s. : how are you starry... |

| Platinum Member | m fine np man.. thx...how's u doin? no even the pre existing installers won't work! EDIT: oh man... i found the problem! u know there's a function in xp which verifies the downloaded files with verisign or other signers when we run it, and confirms whether we want to run it? this is the thing that is causing the problem. once i click on properties and click on unblock (that is it wont confirm with verisign), the file runs.... that function was working quite good, what the hell has gotten wrong with it? | Download and run #12 lefthand side EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. |

| Platinum Member | thanks saurav, but i've solved it just now myself. My hunch was correct, Last night's windows update was to blame. I restored the comp to right before the update installed 3 'fixes' Dont microshaft test their updates or something!? Instead of the box below, i was getting the error because some update caused a problem with this file signature verification feature. ![]() What does this experience teach?? Always make sure u have system restore enabled on at least the OS drive, and make a restore point before running windows update. I would've been screwed if i hadn't done that...and so my no-format run of more than an yr continues Thanks anyways guys! |
