Thread: Need help in a CPU upgrade.

I am looking to change my cpu only.
I am interested in an amd machine.
Needed Configuration is:
1) AMD PHENOM X3 processor
2) Compatible motherboard with AM2+ socket, 4 DIMM sockets, 2 ports for PS-2 mouse, keyboard and one of those blue ports for samsung syncmaster 793s monitor and a lan card
3) 3-4 gb ram
4) 500 gb internal
6) DVD writer 16x
7) UPS
Now i need suggestions along with current prices about which processor, motherboard, ram(i.e hynix,dynet etc), dvd writer etc should i buy.
I live in kolkata and i need suggestions for locations to buy as well.

You can buy an Athlon 2 640 (its a Quad core) for Rs5.5k instead of the dual core mentioned.

Well Phenom X3 series is a triple core series. I am interested in that only. my plan is to buy a AM2+ or AM3 motherboard so that after 3 to 4 years i can upgrade it to a phenom 2 quadcore. I also want 4 dimm slots since i am planning to buy 3gb ram and purchase a 2 gb stick later. This is why any help regarding the specefications i mentioned is necessary. But thanks for the data anyway. Its of some use as i am looking for a UPS, Hard disk etc as well.

for 4GB RAM you need 2 Slots. If your getting a new mobo and processor then get a Phenom 2 X3 or an Athlon 2 X4. At least tell your budget.

oh sorry i totally forgot. my budget is around 15k-16k for cpu.
basically i need the names and prices of the things i specefied in my first post. for eg: in case of ram i need a reply like "buy transcend 800mhz 2gb stick. it wil cost 1700inr." then in case of processor i need a reply like "go for the phenom 8750 x3 or the phenom 2 720. 720 costs ...." now do you understand my needs??

i will mainly use it for:
1) games like nfsmw, nfs carbon, mohpa, call of duty, fifa. but not of crysis type high graphics type games.
2) office work
3) a huge amount of torrent downloads.
4) watching movies
5) web surfing
and other misc stuff

You will not need a tri core for that kind of stuff. Just save money.

As you system will be switched on for looong hrs for downloading, you need to save power too, hence dual core is even better.

The athlon 2 is really good value. Just go for it.

If DDR3 is too costly, then go for a DDR2 setup.

Yeah, you can go for a quad core. Here’s my suggestion:

AMD Athlon II X4 620 – 5.5k

Any 785G chipset based MoBo – 4k

4GB DDR3 (I’d suggest DDR3 because DDR2 is now almost the same price) – 5k

Seagate 7200.12 1TB (this is the best VFM and lowest per GB cost) – 4k

LG DVD writer (brand really doesn’t matter here) -1k

APC Back UPS Pro 650VA with USB monitoring (ask specifically for this as there are other series which come without this feature) – 4k

Total – 23k
