The ATI 5xxx series cards support their new ATI Eyefinity Technology. It is basically support of up to 6 Monitors per graphics card.
Most of the 5xxx series (evergreen) cards being sold support 3 monitors. They have 2 DVI outputs, 1 HDMI out and 1 Display port. So, in order to have a 3 monitor setup, you would need to use the 2 DVI ports and either HDMI or display port. It is best to have identical monitors for such a setup, But these can get costly.
What is the point of such technology you may ask, well, it provides unmatched gaming experience ! These ultra high resolutions provide such a large view area, it sometimes may overload you brain as too many thing will be going on at the same time
This type of setup is best suited for Racing, RTS and simulation games (HAWX, FSX,etc) as the ultra high resolution provides really high detail.
This technology seems really good, but it does have its drawbacks.
- Its pretty costly to have such a setup
- Ultra high resolution means that the performance will take a huge beating
- Currently, CrossfireX does not support gaming with EyeInfinity (AMD says it will be supported soon)
- Many older games may not support such high resolutions
- Many games may look weird due to the aspect ratio(stretched Image)
So let us assume you have the top dog, the ATI 5870. With 3 monitors you will have such a high resolution that even the 5870 is brought down to its knees in some games. Till the time there is no multi GPU support, there seems to be no solution to that problem !
I really feel that despite its drawbacks, its a really awesome technology and is one i would get if i had the money![]()
