Thumbs down GTX 470 and GTX 480 - Too hot, too expensive

I personally have not liked what Nvidia has been doing for the past one year. They have been re-branding and re-badging most of their older cards to make up their mid range and lower segment graphics cards, this strategy may have worked due to today's ill informed customer, but how long could they do it ? They needed something new, something fresh.

The GF100 or the Fermi was looking like their entry into the high end Graphics card market after ATI dominated it with their 58xx series. With initial rumours of the card being a monster and being way way faster than anything ATI had offered, it kept most of us excited. With time passing, more information being leaked and more flaws (potentially critical) surfacing, its future looks a little bleak to me. Many may say its far to early to judge, yes i cant say for sure, but that's how i feel.

The cards, GTX 480 and the GTX 470 are to be their flagship products for this series, they are apparently not so great as previously claimed/expected.

The top dawg, GTX480 is a HOT HOT chip, with power consumption near that of ATI's Dual GPU monster ATI 5970, expected price well over than of the 5970 and performance numbers much lower, i find it hard to understand why most will even buy this card. This all applies if all the leaked information and rumours are true.

The GTX470 is a little cut down version of the 480, its believed to perform somewhere between the 5870 and 5850. The price is said to be between them too, so maybe this card has a decent impact, but i would still go for the ATI cards just because of the fact that they are going to run cooler and consume less power.

Worst part about these cards is that there is no official information on their pricing, date of release or even the specifications. The cards, when released will only be in limited numbers and will probably not be available at many places.

It seems like we will have to live with it. ATI will obviously not cut down the prices as there is not much from Nvidia's side. Even if those cards are good, they will be limited in number due to the yield issues. So guys, the HD5xxx series may not get much cheaper anytime soon aand maybe the launch of the R900(HD 6xxx) will be further pushed back.
