Exactly.
Who wants to run a laptop for downloading big files on battery.
My laptop is continously running through the Power Supply and Fortunately in the area in which I live there are power cuts at the most once or twice a year.
But Unfortunately not using the Battery for too long makes it weak and useless.I cant run my laptop on Battery for more than a hour.
Same for me too, but as I have 4Gigs of RAM and almost half of it gets filled up at least and apart from that the ATI grafix card and AMD procs also take a big loaf of power, so I think 1hr of battery life for me is good enough.
But I repeat the charge discharge cycle every two-three days to keep my battery in shape.
With the spike guard what are the chances of the pc blowin up after keeping it on for long hours?
keeping a PC on for long hours has almost no relation with spike guard.
If your SMPS blows up for some reason then the majority percentage of reason would be overheating.
Spike guard only protects against sudden rise and fall in voltage not overheating. If you have an average good UPS, then even spike guard is also not needed.
My laptop has been on for last three days and is on the adapter most of the time.
So don't worry, you have a desktop, just make provisions for good ventilation in and around the PC.
Maybe a really really bad spike just MAY blow up (ahem, pop it) a capacitor. PSUs generally go kaput when they are loaded beyond their capacity, so if the PC is just idling, the chances of the PSU going kaput are not that high, if it really cheap, it will overheat itself and fry your PC, even may cause a fire that may burn down your house ! So please get a good PSU (sorry for being over dramatic !)
I'd suggest the WD HDD if you plan to leave your PC on for long hours. I have the Western Digital Caviar Green. It's eco-friendly so, it's low on power consumption. It's specs are 2 TB, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache. Hope this helps.
