By Affordable I do not mean cheap, so please don't rant about that. Vendors now have started releasing small SSD (Solid State Drives) at a relatively cheaper price.
Players like Intel and OCZ have announced 32GB drives costing $125 and $99 respectively. These apart from being smaller capacity wise, have a different controller (hence cheaper cost) too. These are slower than other "performance" drives, but are significantly faster than our standard drives when it comes to read speeds.
So what can you do with just 40GB of space? Well, for starters, install your Operating system on that drive (that's like 16-20GB?) along with a few games (lets face it, we play just 2-3 games at a time out of our whole library!). With read speeds of about 125MB/s (writes of about 70MB/s, meh !) these drives are primarily meant for that.
So yes, owning an SSD may not be that far off, just save up a bit and get your hands on one of these.
