    Lightbulb Buying the right UPS.

    Hi guys, this my another Article about buying a UPS..
    UPS stands for un-interruptible power supply, that we all know but the what is the term VA stands for Volt Ampere and how can we buy the correct UPS for our Personal use...

    1VA is egual to 1 Watt
    so calculate and buy a UPS which matches with your SMPS

    UPS are must for every computer and without it when a power cut or Low voltage takes place the computer would face some serious Problem like burning the capacitors etc etc...
    I think most of us use the UPS that came with our Branded pc or bought at a cheaper price point, am not meaning that they are bad... They are good for some period of time and then we can expect leakage in the batteries etc...

    1st thing to note that to buy a UPS is that what SMPS you are running in your system, eg if you run a Real 450w or 500w SMPS the best UPS would be for you is 500va UPS...
    If you are running a 650W SMPS and 500va ups means you will run into sudden shutdown and no batery backup...

    2nd thing that you should see is about the warrenty they supply and the warrenty Period and the Product Manufacturers...
    I preffer buying an APC UPS for any system, as they give an wonderful warrenty by replacing your UPS if it gets any small defect also, they come straightly to our house and replace the product and go...
    Just call their Tool free 24/7 number 18004254272..

    3rd main thing is that to see the stand back time they provide during power cuts, some may give 10min and some 20min and some 30 to 45min and so on..
    the higher the battery back up the higher the Price point will be..
    If you go for an higher VA UPS the higher price will be...

    That much only i know guys, Thanks for going through my Article...
    Stay in touch...

    I dont agree.

    1VA != 1W.

    I have a 550W PSU (corsair) and I use 500VA PSU (APC) and I get some 5 min time, more than enough for me to save my documents and switch off.

    VA is Volt Ampere. Its the rating of the UPS. Basically higher the VA longer the battery backup and peak backup. The 500VA UPS can give about 250W and the 650VA UPS gives 300W. These numbers are for APC UPS and may differ for other brands.

    That chart is for 120V. We are on 220V
    Example;
    V x A =W or VA rating
    120V~ x 4 Amps = 480Watts or 480 VA
    240V~ x 2 Amps = 480 Watts or 480 VA

    Incorrect.

    VA does not consider Power factor. That is why all these are rated in VA and not Watts.

    Voltage x current x Power Factor = Wattage.

    Power factor depends on the load, varies between 0 and 1.

    Read it again. The PF is assumed as 60% of the VA rating. PF in these devices can never be 1, let alone being close. However, in PSUs, we can achieve .99 Pf (Active power factor correction).

    500x0.6 = 300W. Your UPS will start beeping for overload at 250W itself.

    There is some confusion over here.....

    UPS rating and PSU ratings and Actual power consumption are very different.

    I have a 550W PSU, I can draw a peak of around 500W from my PSU. If i do that i would be drawing 625W from my UPS/wall socket.

    But, my PC power consumption never goes above 200W and that goes for most other systems. So thats about 230W odd from the socket (232W to be precise).

    Hence my UPS does not overload. Simple.

    How much is the price difference between an Inverter and an UPS?

    If it aint that much you may consider getting an Inverter
