    Default Suggestions for this configuration

    My present PC's specs are:
MB: D102GGC2 with onboard ATI Radeon Xpress 200
    2 GB DDR2
    P-4 3.0 Ghz

Its about two years old. The problem is that when I tried to run Windows 7 on it, there were a lot of problems. First, the Aero theme would simply not start. Then I found a driver after a lot of searching, and got the Aero running, but if I start an HD video, the graphics card crashes - it gives a message that the driver stopped working and was started successfully. Sometimes the computer just freezes with coloured lines all over the screen. Also, XP mode won't run because the PC has no hardware virtualization.

I run mainly XP so it isn't such a big problem, but I'm buying another PC, for home, and while no one is going to play games on it, I want it to run Windows 7 smoothly, and I want it between 15 and 18K. My assembler has suggested the following configuration:

    MB: Biostar G31D - M7
    P-4 2.8 Ghz HT
    2 GB DDR2 RAM
    18.5 inch HCL TFT
    and the other stuff.

Will this config run Windows 7 properly? The MB is not Intel, so I might get an Intel original one instead. I also asked for dual core, but my assembler says this HT one is better.

    Please advise.

    1. Aero theme mainly depends upon your Graphic card's performance. Even some onboard VGA supports it like Intel 82945G. ATI Radeon Xpress 200 would simply get overheated if you activate Aero theme on it.
    2. What's your budget?
Personally I don't like any of the configuration other than the RAM.

    P-4 2.8 Ghz HT
Change the processor to Core 2 Duo or Core i3, they will be better than That.

    2 GB DDR2 RAM
    RAM is ok.

Well, if that is what your assembler has suggested, ask him to look for another job. No one will suggest a P4 buddy, so you may have got it wrong, he might have said Core 2 Duo @2.8GHz.

Anyways, I would say you use the old DDR2 RAM that you have on your parent's PC and go for this:

    Processor: AMD Sempron 140 - 1.7k
    Motherboard: Asus M2N68-AM PLUS - 2.3k
    RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2 800 MHz - 2k
    GPU: Onboard N.A.
    HDD: Seagate 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series- 2.2k
Cabinet: Zebronics Bijli ATX ,iBall - what ever you like - 1.7k
SMPS: bundled with Cabinet - Rs 0
    Optical Drive: L.G. GH22NS30 SATA/Samsung SH-S22F SATA - 1.1k
    Speakers: Creative SBS 2.0 - .5k
    Monitor: Benq 19" LCD - 6k
    Keyboard+Mouse: Logitech Combo - .6k

you can view more configs here

Okay, I'll make sure the processor is dual core. And I'll ask my assembler for Asus or Gigabyte MBs. From what I've heard, AMD heats up too much.

My budget is about 18 thousand, or not more than 20 thousand. I'm not going to use this PC, my parents will, and they are going to use it only for typing kind of stuff, and the occasional movie. The only thing I want on that PC is to have Aero running.

I already have 1 GB DDR2 spare, since I earlier had 1 GB and then I bought a 2 GB stick and my present MB only supports 2 GBs. So at present I'll fit the 1 GBs, then when prices fall, I'll get another 1 or 2 GBs.

Its the monitor I'm a bit confused about, there are too many companies.

There is some mistake. Biostar G31D - M7 supports socket 775. So obviously "P4 2.8 GHz HT" is not correct fit.

And 18.5" HCL? Are you constrained by budget?

As HACKdown, rajan and other said, you can get very good combo for 26K.

May I suggest to you to not hold the purse strings too tight. A PC is not purchased every year or two. Go for the best that you can afford right now that will serve you for at least 4~5 years.

I got a rough estimate of the price: 18K. The person who assembles the computer works in a company. He assembles computers only from time to time, and he gets all the parts from friends who are dealers.

The processor is an Intel dual core. I asked him to change the Motherboard, and he gave me the names of three ASUS MBs, of which it will one. The three are: ASUS P5QPL-AM which has Intel GMA X4500 graphics, and ASUS P5KPL AM / PS and ASUS P5PKL AM IN, both of which have Intel GMA 3100.

I've decided to use the 1GB RAM that I've got with me which I don't use, and add more later when the price falls, so price of RAM is not included in the total price.

The monitor is still HCL 18.5, changing it to Samsung or LG means adding another 2K to 2.3K.

The speakers will cost around 1K. I decided not to go in for the .5K ones.

I don't know about the other stuff, like the HDD.

This computer will be used by my parents, mainly for typing and stuff, and occasionally for movies. The one I use has a lower configuration, but its okay for me, since it can easily run 720p movies, and I don't need to play games. Adding 2K for the Samsung / LG LCD pushes the price to 20K, which is still without RAM. The price seems too high, and all this only to get Aero running.

But in terms of processors, I think AMD is far better than intel. This I'm telling you by my own experience. If this pc is not for gaming and all, I think you'll get a great pc within Rs18-20 thousand.
Explore yourself the products of your PC before you buy. never trust an assembler!

The problem with having one set of RAM modules now and adding more later is the RAM speed.

    Suppose:

    1. your current RAM throughput speed is x Ghz and
    2. later on you add more (compitble) RAM that works at y Ghz and
    3. y > x then
    4. your computer will force the the new RAM modules to work at x Ghz

    ---

For HDD, you can go for a minimum of 320 GB right now; but go for higher size if you can afford it. Stick to WD, Seagate, Maxtor and other such known brands.

Know that HDD becomes full very quickly, especially if you keep all the media files on the disk.

He is smoothly running win7 in his pc. and that aero too which you are mentioning.

I think you should go for an AMD setup, here are the reason:

1)Awesome value for money - By far the best performance for the buck for low budgets, have a look at Athlon II dual core processors.
    2) Better onboard Graphics - Newer AMD motherboards, 780G chipset onwards, have decent onboard graphics, far far better than the crappy X3100,etc found on the Intel Boards.
    3)AMD processors run cool buddy

AMD rocks. Certainly better than intel as Rajan said above.

Sorry about AMD, but I've heard it heats up too much. But thanks for the info.

As far as HDDs are concerned, I already have a 1 TB one on the one I'm using. And the newer computer won't need a large one. Its the price of the new computer that I find too high.

    .
May I know who told you that AMD heats up too much. Do you live somewhere here in Uttarakhand or UP? There is a general misconception in these parts that AMD is not reliable.
