One GB RAM will be too low. Try atleast 2 GB.

AMD is cheaper. They give good performance also. But some high end programs may not work on it.

Don't go for AMD processor as there are some heating issues.instead of dual core ,opt for core2Duo cpu.it will give more processing power.

    1. What type of work does your son wants to do? Gaming, Multimedia etc?
    2. What's your budget?
    3. Either go with a PC which will last you long or go with a cheaper alternative which your son can change after 12th.
The Intel setup doesn't fit in both the cases. You can go with the MD setup also, but there are much better configurations out there for the same cost.
As said by meetdilip, at least go with 2GB RAM.

I am fed up of this accusation that AMD has heating issues. Present day AMD processors do not have any heating issues at all.

I use a tool known as CATIA. It is processor specific and won't work on my AMD PC. Regretting my decision to choose AMD. Otherwise, AMD is as good as Intel.

CATIA v5 onwards have been made compatible with AMD Phenom 2 X 4 editions.

Newer AMD processors have no heating issues at all, here are some temps of the Phenom II X6 :

Thats 44C under load and 76C when overclocked to 4.15GHz on a stock cooler. I think its enough proof that AMD has no heat problems.
The config suggested by the shop keeper is not good, totally outdated. Have a look at this:

AMD Cpu does not have any HEAT issues, am using Athlon 5200+ for the past 1 1/2yrs and i use to get inside 30c with a overclocking at 3.0ghz and even though the chip is 65nm and i used the stock cooler the temp use to stay down..
Now i am using a Athlon II x4 625 cpu and it use to stay even cooler than the old Athlon 5200+..

Heat issues were there before ages, now its not..

Go with the AMD setup and it will bring the budget a bit down compared to Intel setup..

    @mihir94
    price difference in LCD monitors.
    (I use Samsung SyncMaster915V)
    Both are actually LCD displays.
The TFT's, are just a better type of LCD.
There are three different formats of TFT.
    XGA (extended graphics array),
SXGA (super extended graphics array), and
    UXGA (ultra extended graphics array).

I agree that AMD is cheaper, from my experiences.
