    Default connecting 2 desktops

    Sir,
I have 2 desktops.1 with windows 7 and one with windows xp. I have one airtel broadband connection and use beetel 220bx modem adsl2. My problem is that I can use internet only on one computer. I want to use the internet on 2 computers simultaneously one for kids and one for myself.my computers have onboard ethernet ports.

however when I contacted Airtel in the matter they advised that I get a wifi router at a cost of RS1500/-. and then I can connect both the computers although I donot have a wifi card.

I shall be glad if some help a step by step guide to use both the computers is offered for other than the costly wifi from Airtel, like using a multiport modem instead of the existing 220bx or connecting the computers through a usb cable if it is possible.

    1. How many lan ports does your modem have. If only one, you need to either buy a wifi router or a modem with at least 2 LAN ports.

    2. Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig/all, post the screen shot for both machines.

    3. Configure your modem in PPPoE and try.

    4. You can use a hub or switch to share the connection with other computers.

This is the simplest, cheapest way of doing it. A 4-port hub/switch will allow you to connect up to three pcs (wired) to your modem. Believe it or not, it would also work with a stack of switches serving a hundred PCs! The principles are just the same.

Just remember that for simultaneous, shared use, you must be connecting in "router" ("always on") mode, ie your username and password are configured into the modem.

Have done exactly this in the past, and am currently using a wireless router to do much the same thing. All with a LAN-single-port modem
