I will advise Core2©QuadTM. I will also suggest at least 2 GB RAM - RAM is cheap and most useful.

And what is cget HDD? Do you mean Seagate? Cause, i have never heard of cget.

I will suggest that you rethink about the following. My suggestions are

Quad Core with 45nm will be costly and will not add on any extra performance as of now (not many Applications today can take advantage of the Quad Core processor)
For your budget you will be better off with a good Core 2 Duo Processor (45nm with 6-12MB L2 Cache). Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Processor (3.16 Ghz, 45 nm, 6 MB L2 Cache) will cost you 9k some change.

Seriously think about the motherboard, I am sure there are better Motherboards at the same price. I will suggest ASUS or Gigabyte with better features/bundle

Put in more RAM, its cheaper and makes your PC faster (preferably get DDR2 800Mhz or 1000Mhz) however a word of caution, make sure that its compatible with your Motherboard.

Think about a good Video Card, its a necessity nowdays. I will suggest the
Palit ATI Radeon HD4650 video card with 512MB GDDR3 memory (its available for around 5 or less)

Get a good Cabinet and SMPS Unit, this ensure a hassle free Desktop. If possible go in for 3rd Party cooling (nothing too expensive, coolermaster is good) this along with a good SMPS unit reduces the noise of the Desktop.

I am planning to buy a new desktop. My Usage is as follows:
(a) my computer may remain switched on for more than 24 hours at a stretch.
(b) ordinary games like: Counter-strike, GTA, etc/
(c) Watching and Storing Movies, Movies and Movies
(d) Storing loads of songs

I have selected the following configuration. Please suggest whether each of them is compatible with the other or not. And if you think i should not spend on something or I should spend more on something please guide me.

I would really recommend a Phenom 2 920 instead of the Q9300. Plz read through other threads too. There are quiet a few options. Just read through them and then tell us what u think .

I am building a system myself, here is my research thus far, I am open for your suggestions,

* AMD Phenom(TM) II X4 940 quad-core processor (3.0GHz)
* MSI DKA790GX (or) Asus M4A78-E (or) GA-MA790GP-UD4H - don't which to choose, currently none is available in market as I enquired.
* 8GB DDR2-800MHz dual channel SDRAM (4x2048)
* 500GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive

What else can I add to this ??

U can add a good PSU(first decide if/which GFX card u want). A good looking case. Optical drive.

Yes, planning on using Photoshop too, but mainly this will be a HTPC. Optical drive I would plan a LG/Samsung DVD RW (already have one on my old pc, so the optical drive can wait).

I believe I could plugin the HDMI to a 32" LCD TV which I already own, so that's pretty much it.

How much SMPS Watts should I buy for this is 450 W enough for the above config. I would probably use 64 bit OS for all that RAM. If it exceeds the liquidity I have, I will cutback on RAM or HDD for later. But I am pretty certain that the Proc/Motherboard (chipset) should not change (can change only if you guys suggest a better alternative).

I haven't decided the budget yet.

It does not have a ATI3850 inbuilt, it has a ATI 3300(for the GX) and ATI3200(for 780G,ur asus one) inbuilt.
Well since ur making a HTPC, stick with the onboard(inbuilt) card if u have no cash.
If u wanna save cash, u can get a cheaper Processor,instead of cutting on RAM and other stuff. A 940 for an HTPC is kind of an overkill. Get a 920 or w8 for for the Tricore Phenoms to get to india.
Btw which case did u get/plan to get for the HTPC ??

I haven't decided on the case yet, but will decide on it once I believe I can get these components, currently the response is not so cool, the shopwallahs don't have the components yet. They are quoting 9950 or other phenom quadcores, I don't want to buy them - so waiting and watching

What case do you suggest, also suggest me the power rating for the SMPS.

I will not comment too much on the PSU and its wattage as i have made a few errors. This case comes with a 380W high quality 80+efficience PSU.

If u do not want to put a GFX card, go for this one:

This good quality 350W PSU.In this case u can not put a different PSU as there is space for a mini one not a standard ATX one.

I am in Chennai - guess the procs are not yet available here, planning to go to Richie street (Chennai's Nehry Place I believe) tomorrow - update you guys if I end up purchasing it.

I think even the processor we can get them, but the motherboard with all the HT 3.0 and support for DDR3 memory sticks is not yet available - MSI DKA790GX (or) Asus M4A78-E (or) GA-MA790GP-UD4H.

I haven't decided which to choose, but I would have to go by one which is available, - Can you suggest any alternative other than the above with HT 3.0 support. I am not crazy about DDR3, so that can wait.

hehe nice cabby but very costly(min 15k). Also, u would have a had time attaching the LCD screen on the case. Stick to the antec NSK2480. It comes with an Antec 380W PSU. Costs 6K online.

If u wanna put a Full size motherboard, the thing will be HUGE.
Keep an HTPC simple. Put a single 1TB HDD. A phenom II X3 820(2.8Ghz 6MB L3 cache). 1 Blu ray drive. 1 ATI 4670/9600 GT green edition.

MSI DKA790GX has 2 PCI-e slots, if used together they will operate at 8X each. So no big advantage i guess ? Other 780G mobos have 1 PCI-e slot and a few PCI slots for ur sound card, TV tuner card etc.
