Default We’ll soon watch TV clearer than DVD

The 1982 Asian Games gave Indian viewers a gift — colour television. The Common-wealth Games next year is set to unveil the next generation of TV viewing.

Doordarshan (DD) plans to launch high definition television (HDTV) broadcast, which will provide viewers a picture that is 16 times sharper than standard television.

The Information and Broadcasting ministry has asked Cabinet’s approval for studios in four metros to broadcast the Games on HDTV broadcast, already adopted by BBC and Sky Sports.

Broadcasters who have bought rights for the Games will be provided signal in HDTV format. “The HD picture can be shown in cable and satellite homes in India and abroad,” said a Doordarshan official, who was not willing to be quoted, as he is not authorised to speak to media.

But the better quality will come for a price — your television will have to be HD enabled. “Some of the televisions are now HD supported,” said DD’s Engineer-in-Chief R.R. Prasad, who heads the project. Other television sets can be made HD compatible with a help of a set top box, he added.

Since most of DD’s 1,400 transmitters are still on analog mode — which requires an antenna — the HDTV broadcast will not be available to many DD viewers. DD has earmarked Rs 430 crore for digitalisation of its system.

The ministry has asked for Rs 170 crore to set up the studios, saying it will make the broadcast quality equivalent or even better than the Beijing Olympics. “We are getting top international sports consultants to set up high quality broadcast format comparable with best in the world,” BS Lalli, Chief Executive Office of Prasar Bharati Corporation, told Hindustan Times.

This goes without saying. Without a medium to watch HD, you cannot benefit from it.

Also it should be noted that HDTV broadcast will be costlier to watch also. Expect a 1.5 times rise in DTH fares for those who will opt for HD.

But in spite of that, HD is welcome.

The Indian serials will still be bad whether in SD or HD ;-)

It's just that you can see the crap more clearly in HD ;-)

They should concentrate on the quality of programs. The production values too are very low. Lets hope they improve that too!

Most of the GPUs provide HD out and the newer generation of display devices are also sporting HD as standard.

My bad. I just intended that HD is becoming common these days. Should have added that too to the previous post.

In Monsters Inc the animators used new algorithms to mimic the response of fur and hair....

I saw the DVD but the vividness was not the same as the one which I saw on a huge Sony HD TV...

My friend played the PS3 on the same TV..that was mind boggling too

I think people are worrying too much on HD TV Set cost. Guys, that is really peanuts. At the moment, a 32" (full) HD-TV, e.g. LG Model : 32LG80FR (Jazz Series), costs Rs. 50K as per the website. Retailer are offering further discount on this in terms of actual cost reduction plus an upscaling DVD player plus 50 DVD movies.

In time the cost will reduce further.

This is a one time cost/investment. This should be the least of your worries. The worry is the HD broadcast cost. At the moment, DTH price is close to Rs. 375/- (highest channels) give or take Rs. 25. The HD equivalent of the same will cost at least Rs. 800/- initially in my opinion. It may settle down a little but will still be high. This will be a recurring cost.

Note that 29" CRT TVs started at Rs. 60K plus and now are available at Rs. 20K. Same thing will happen with LCD panels also.
