Default DD to broadcast in HD

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for an ambitious Rs 165 crore plan to allow Doordarshan to upgrade its picture quality to high definition format (HDTV). This will pave the way for DD to telecast the Commonwealth Games 2010 in a superior format.

The proposal was moved by the I&B ministry and will enable DD to beam 16 times sharper images than standard television to Indian TV viewers.

Most of DD's 1,400 transmitters are still on analogue mode, which requires an antenna, and the public broadcaster will need to digitise its entire system.

thats a good news Amal... but i am confused if DD will transmit the things from terrestrial network( towers) or by satellites or its thought of transmitting digitized things from the source transmitters that is possibly in Delhi/Mumbai...

Yes, but not all of us watch it, by choice. Even though, DD is one of the widest channel in India.

I am optimistic on many counts:
    • If DD goes on HD transmission, this will mean HD TV for free as DD does not charge fee
    • It will boost the sales of HD-TV sets and bring the costs down
    • Some content providers (program makers) will realize that people will be able to see their programs on HD for free and hence they will have more market; hence they may go to Prasar Bharati with their content.
    • Other channel operators will not be able to make the HD pay channels insanely expensive because they will have to match the free HD of DD.
    • Of course all this is based on the assumption that HD will come free on DD

    Good analysis...sirjee.

However I disagree with the second last point.

This will also force the private players to start upgrading. Which is not necessarily a good thing. Mainly because they will charge extra for HD broadcasts.

Yes and No. If you read carefully, I said that they will not be able to charge insanely expensive.

Just look at Sun HD. They are charging a ridiculous amount for 2/3 (movie) HD channels. If DD HD channels are FTA, then that will put a brake on charging too high.

But DD has no content to speak off...Private players like Star Sony Zee etc have all kinds of award ceremonies and tamashas running through out the year.

Just imagine Rakhi swayamvar grand Finale in full HD pay per view...I don't see it outside the realm of possibilty.

Yes. Please read my post again.

@md, if DD goes HD, then we can expect DD National 1 and 2 and DD Sports to be in HD.

Nope I don't think that is the way private players think. Have you seen the quality/content of their so called "value added" services?

I am afraid this HD thing will also become a niche thing. Atleast in the short term it will be expensive.
