I&B ministry seeks TRAI advice on TV channels
Faced with a barrage of requests for setting up new entertainment and news channels, the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) ministry headed by Ambika Soni has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to recommend some parameters or eligibility criteria and financial viability related criteria for setting up of channels.

The I&B secretary Raghu Menon is learnt to have written to the TRAI chairman on the issue keeping in mind aspects of Spectrum allocation. Besides suggesting that some parameters be established keeping in mind the channel boom and Spectrum space constraints, the I&B ministry has also proposed that channels be asked to sign an undertaking in the nature of financial viability to ensure job security for its employees. TRAI has been asked for their views on the issue.

The ministry has also taken a serious view of a number of illegal channels being beamed out by cable operators in some parts of the country. I&B minister Ambika Soni is even learnt to have written to the Home Ministry and state Chief Ministers on the issue as several of these illegal channels broadcast sensitive issues. The issue, it was learnt, was taken up in a recent Cabinet meeting.
