    Hi All !!

I would like to know that how does these mini-dishes of D2H work? Do the just receive the data from the satellite or do they transmit also some data?

    Default DTH MIniDishes

A DTH network consists of a broadcasting centre, satellites, encoders, multiplexers, modulators and DTH receivers.

A DTH service provider has to lease Ku-band transponders from the satellite. The encoder converts the audio, video and data signals into the digital format and the multiplexer mixes these signals. At the user end, there will be a small dish antenna and set-top boxes to decode and view numerous channels. On the user's end, receiving dishes can be as small as 45 cm in diametre.

DTH is an encrypted transmission that travels to the consumer directly through a satellite. DTH transmission is received directly by the consumer at his end through the small dish antenna. A set-top box, unlike the regular cable connection, decodes the encrypted transmission.

So Does the Antenna send any information from its end .. or does it only receive signal and that mean it receives all the signals and we can see only the channels which the set top box is decoding?

You are right the mini dish decodes the signals received from Satellite and we can see the channels. But you antenna works as a medium between satellite and set top box just like wireless router.

    Hi,

Your dish antenna receives signals, this process is called downlinking. For a customer to see TV, all his decoder needs to do is downlink the signal, and decrept it according to what he has paid to his service provider, say Dish TV.

If you have not opted for a channel, that channel in the encrypted form is still being received by your dish antenna, but yout setop box wont be able to decode it. This is how it becomes "paid" channels.

Comming back to your question, there are some antennas that are capable of "uplinking" their feeds to the satellites directly. These can be generally seen with the news reporters van, having a dish on top of them. Also, all the live feeds, for instance, a cricket match seen live includes this process.

Now, again technology have developed, and there are antennas that are capable of both downlinking and uplinking. Even internet can be accesed in remote areas using this technology. This is called a VSAT, Very Small Aperture Terminal. In India so far this method is not in use.. Probably we are using this in our military services.
