    Default What is IPTV?

Another broadcasting techology is ipTV which is the short form of Internet Protocol television. The services are given by using an internet connection. Many do not know about ipTV but it has many features which people are aware of.
IPTV has three services which are actually separated into three groups:
-You can view live television, without or with the interactivity of the tv shows which are shown currently
-You can replay tv shows which were shown on television either a few hours ago or even a few days ago, you can also replay the current shows from the beginning and this is called time shifted television.
-Video on Demand (VOD) is another feature of ipTV,this allows you to view a range of videos from learning something to health, to general knowledge.

IPTV is a service which is not affected by rain like DTH service is. One of the other advantages is that only one single telephone line is used which enables a telephone to be used along with the internet and IPTV.

Currently in India ipTV is provided by Airtel, Reliance, MTNL and BSNL.

One major issue haunting the iptv technology is the telephone wireline feasibility, since iptv is provided over adsl connections through copper based telephone network as the last mile. For instance Airtel has iptv feasibility in only 2 cities - Delhi & Bangalore according to their website.
Whereas DTH can be provided anywhere even in the remotest areas since its transmission is satellite based. So, its installation & infrastructure costs are much low , thus accounting for its popularity & acceptability as a more viable business model by service providers.

You would probably expect companies like Airtel to have availability in all major cities if not all of India. Just out of curiosity any idea on the cost of ipTV?

The tariff plan for airtel is available on airtel's website, while that of MTNL & BSNL is available on the website of their official franchisee Myway.Prices vary from Rs 200 to 600 per month.modem, set top box ,line rental charges extra.

IPTV is a lot better way of delivering content to people as compared to DTH or any other medium but only if it works. Bsnl and Mtnl have very poor infrastructure and expecting IPTV to work on their network is day dreaming. Airtel has a lot better infra but it is not fiber. IPTV is still a thing of the future even in developed countries for the most part.

RIL may attempt to do something with their 4G network in future once they launch but before that the IPTV or VOD is almost non existent.

Oh that's interesting, I did not know this service, it is really good and revolutionary idea to help share more information in less time and around the world, with this there are fewer restrictions and more freedom to communicate with anyone we want. Neither knew you could have the function of video on demand (VOD). That is good news and something new to learn of course.

I wanted to add that, IPTV is not a protocol itself. The IPTV or Television on protocol IP, has been developed based on the video-streaming. This technology will evolve in the near future television today, although they are required to do so much faster than today's networks to ensure quality of service.
