Default Dishtv to launch HD soon

Dishtv is planning to launch HD very soon and that too be around 30% more cheaper then what sundirect is offering right now.

    News Article

Direct-to-home (DTH) service provider Dish TV plans to launch high definition (HD) ready set-top boxes (STBs) in the next 3 months. Its price is expected to be 25-30 per cent less than the comparable offering of its competition, Sun Direct, according to Salil Kapoor, COO of Dish TV.

“HDTV programmes have better video and audio quality than conventional digital TV broadcast. We hope to accelerate our subscriber base with the launch of HDTV set-top boxes,” says Kapoor. Existing Dish TV users will be required to upgrade their STBs and have high definition LCD TVs to avail to this service. The company claims to have over 6.6 million subscribers.

I am merely speculating here. But this is what I expect:

    a) STB cost will be around Rs. 8,000.
    b) Not all channels will be HD. I think that some sports and infotainment/news channels will be in HD. More channels will join HD service later. Of course, DD Sports will be in HD.
    c) Subscription costs will be high, at least initially. Expect to pay Rs. 50~75 per HD channel. Prices will come down later.

p/s. If you watch the current IPL cricket matches and note the camera showing another camera, you will notice that the cameras are HD.

Don't joke about it. I am serious.

The government has a lot of money. Commonwealth games will be shown on DD Sports.

And lest anyone forget, do remember that it was the IX Asian Games, 1982 that ushered in the colour TV in India.

I suppose that you got this list from Sun DTH HD website.

Note that "Colors HD" is not a true HD channel. The channel is showing upscaled content (SD or 576i service upscaled to 1080i).

This means that each provider is going to differentiate from others by providing different channels as HD.

DTH provider cannot and will not differentiate. It will depend upon content providers.

But Dth can upscale channels for HD even if there are no content providers right? like in case of Colors not a true HD yet upscaled!

Upscaled content is not HD. It should not be claimed as HD. It is a shame and sham that Colors channels are calling their service as HD.

    - HD means a native resolution of 1280x720
    - Full or True HD means a native resolution of 1920x1080.

    Period.

Consumers are unaware of such claims. The Right to information should enforce the details of True HD channels.

What RTI are we talking about? People here get away with murder.

Legislation, litigation, etc. won' help much. Best way is to be aware and choosy.

Yes it is sad that practically 'Customer is the king' is not applied.
