Default Dish TV vs Tata Sky

Now if I want new STB it is better to get a new Dish connection @990 as Dish TV guys say they cant couple new STB with existing Viewing card.

so waht one should do go for new Dish TV connection or new Tata Sky connection??

    presently I use platinum pack.

If your Box is faulty then you can contact any nearest dishtv dealer and get your box Changed, But if its not faulty then its better if you retain that.

Further If you are planning to buy another new connection then you can go for Dishtv @ Rs.990 with cash back offer of Rs.990.

If you go for a new connection, you will be paying installation charges all over again plus the cost of the extra length cable if required.

Between DishTV and TS, there are enough threads on the topic.

I would suggest TATA Sky is the best as I am using Dish and TATA in 2 various places. The channels are cheaper on TATA with good service. I really want to get rid of my Dish TV settop Box but do not know how to give it away at a price. Can someone suggest.

Can we not use an old cable if we have one for a new connection?

Yes. You can use the old cable but that cost is insignificant. Anyway, new connection will come with some 10-15 m of cable free.

There is never any free lunch. Charges are always built in somewhere.

If the cost of the packages is the same, then where would the installation charges be built in......you have your box which you pay for if its an HD, then there are the package costs, it was installation charges and if they are not there then, in the initial stage there is no payment is there.........or is there something which I maybe missing?

Sometime ago, I switched from Dish TV to Tatasky. The guy gave me Rs. 1000 as a discount. Though he did not say so, it is probably a rebate to attract new customers. Airtel is offering free installation. Maybe that is just one ploy. Anyway, what is the big deal on installation? It hardly costs Rs. 500.

True installation hardly costs anything, but for some even Rs500 means a lot, but to the company its not much, so they can easily waive this off.

People often consider and pay (undue) inmportance to upfront/one-time costs. When buying DTH, please (and please) pay lot of attention to package prices. I am neither pro or against Airtel, TataSky, DishTV, etc. I am just bringing to notice that changing DTH service is not easy and once you are locked in, you will be paying the monthly subscription charges which may cripple.

Driving the same analogy further, please buy cars because it is cheaper, runs on diesel, has lot of upfront goodies including discount, etc. Often what is not taken into account:

    • What is the resale value of the car? Note that the price of the car is not what you paid upfront. But the total cost of ownership is original price paid less resale value. It is here that a Toyota Innova will be much cheaper than say a Mahindra XUV-500 or Xylo and I am not talking about looks, features, etc.
    • Diesel or Petrol? I have seen people buy diesel cars even when their daily running is 40 km or less. The higher cost of the diesel car plus the high maintenance is often not considered. A Santro Petrol is a better buy than Beat Diesel also considering the previous point.

But coming back to DTH, please ignore intial freebees. DTH companies know that they can milk you later.

If you go for a new connection, you will be paying installation charges and also paying for channel package plan but may be some Rupee company leave like 100 or 50 Rs
