If the PC is unable to read the flash drive, how will vlc read it?

To OP, have you tried reading the drive on another machine?

Alright then format the pen drive then convert it to NTSC and then record and open it from PC.
To convert FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps:

    Click Start>Run there type CMD
At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
    convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
    convert e: /fs:ntfs

That seems to be a completely different solution,
We already have a recorder STB and are able to record videos hassle free on USB devices, just need some way to decode them on a PC.
Anyways i was looking for one solution too, i managed to find a way to save recording to PC and later restore them to the USB and watch them from STB, you still cannot watch them on PC but you can store copies of USB images which you may restore later and watch,
    I used a tool
to create image of the usb disk, then format the drive use for other purpose or record more videos, later you may restore old images to the usb disk and view old videos again,

I tried but was unable to crack and extract files out of the image. Hoping anyone else could followup on this or something else and find out a way, I would be happy to help if anything is needed.

    Dear friends

All the replies given are not understanding your question. I too got the problem. I understand the manufacture had a program written in such a way a PC cannot read. We need to find a program which can read. Do not listen to the issue of formation etc. When we read the literature of the manufacture he clearly says because of copy right issue he has done the same. If some one who understands the question and who can give some practical answers not just an answer for the sake of answering welcome. Many members like us are eager.

Further when we record the clips on the pen drive and put in the PC it shows as if the pen drive is not formatted. It shows RAW format on the pen drive unused 0 and used 0 available 0. To start with when we first put the pen drive in the Dish TV unit it formats the pen drive. I presume it formats it to a different settings. Only a computer gig can help us please.

    Regards

It is illegal to record on the DTH recording box and watch on a computer. Anything you record on the set top boz is encrypted and they dont do it for fun. It is required by the law.

    @ raodvr
Yes that is right. We dont have a lot of experts here.. just too many noobs like you who come looking for ways to crack encryption Get a life kid!

This is not a DTH forum - this is a broadband forum. I believe that we solve a lot of broadband related issues and this forum is very popular in that respect. We have DTH section to discuss some DTH related problems. How DishTV records on a USB and how they encrypt it is not a problem, as long as people are able to view the contents where they are meant to be seen. You have 2 posts and you are threatening to quit? This is indeed funny.

Note that this forum does not advocate piracy of any kind. If there were indeed suggestions and posts on how to crack software, DRM, etc., we would instantly delete such posts and ban such "experts".

    dear admin
you misunderstood my intentions. I have no desire to pirate the recorded content . The DTH provide me program content to see it , store it and watch any no of times.
I agree pirates do such things once copy to a pc and such people do not need to crack the file format they have many other alternatives. If I hurt you by saying to you bye , I am sorry. I admire your approach to piracy please keep it up. I still continue my efforts to explore to find about the dish tv file format

Default Use these steps to get out these issues

    Dear All,

i think there is no need of fighting each other just use below steps & you all will be out of subjected issue....

You can fix this issue by following some simple steps given below.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window will appear.
    3. On this disk management window, you can see some drives including the portable drive. Right click on your portable drive and click delete volume.. It will erase your pendrive data (Because Dish TV format recording can’t be seen on computer)
    4. Now assign a new drive letter which is not being used by any of your drives in My Computer.
    5. After assigning the new drive letter your portable drive will show up in my computer with other drives
I hope the above solution will help to fix this trouble, If found given advise useful reply me on my mail id

    sushant.connect@live.com

    Thanks

OK. Old thread. Let me go back to the original issue. Admin made it clear in a post.

When you record programs on STB via USB on a USB stick or Harddisk, the recorder reformats the USB disk and records everything in a custom encrypted format. The MAC Id of the STB is one (and just one) of the encryption keys. Encryption uses MAC ID, custom key, and custom Java program. The recorded program is only readable on the same STB (not even another STB). Of course, the PC does not recognize the custom file format (it is not FAT32 or NTFS), let alone reading the table of contents (file names) or the content itself.

Using RAW reading, one may be able to extract the contents somehow but again it will be useless.

However, the encryption is not REALLY COMPLEX and it can be broken. But it is H/W specific too.
