Default Dish truHD+ claims of "unlimited recording" is actually anadditional burden of cost

Dish Tv has launched their new recorder called Dish TruHD+ which claims that it allows you to record “unlimited” TV programs on their DVR. All people have to do is buy an external hard drive and connect it to the set top box. While it sounds good, the truth is that it is just a marketing ploy by Dish Tv to position itself in DVR market.

Let me deconstruct how it works. This is known as DVR lite. This concept, allows subscribers to use the HD set top box as a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) by plugging in a USB based flash drive (pen drive/ external hard disk drive). A HD Set top box has a USBPort. A USB based flash drive like a pen drive or an external hard disk drive can be connected to the box to create a hard disk functionality The basic DVR features such as record ,rewind, fast forward etc then become available on insertion of the flash drive. The catch is , you have to buy two things, first a USB drive to store the data and a specialist DVR remote. And these entail great additional costs.

So while Dish TruHD+ may look really convenient, things get complicated when you actually start using it. Getting the USB drives, upgrading it if it falls short, buying the right DVR remote are just too many unnecessary hassles. I would rather get a conventional HD DVR like Tata Sky+ HD.

Not necessarily. Most people have some form of pen drive or an external HDD. Now even if we were supposed to purchase a new USB HDD, it will be useful otherwise for other purposes also unlike the dvr.

As regards to the remote, I agree that there is an additional cost but a remote may not be as expensive as a traditional new STB + DVR.

You must give credit when due unless this innovation does not work as promised or works out to be very expensive.

The pendrive has to always be plugged in to enable the recording function image you have a handy pendrive will you always keep it plugged in the STB? Also if you look out for series recording you will have to plug the pen drive in daily at the same time which invloves tremendous co-ordination. Most of all a normal SD definition hindi movie with advertisements runs for more than 4 hours and needs more than 4 GB of storage space. Thus to download 20 hours content you need to purchase atleast a 32 GB flash drive that will cost more than Rs 1600 according to current market rates. Additional stortage of say 500 GB costs almost Rs 4000-7000. Also there will be no remote recording function which makes it even more difficult to co-ordinate recording lacks feasibility and is a very uncomfortable process.

If a function is being provided they should also provide the mean to implement the function isn't it? first we have to have our own drive plus we have to spend for a remote....

I wouldn't see expense in this case as what they claim "no additional cost" is actually a lot of burden and cost to the subscriber with no feasibility and convenience. I rather spend a little more and have the proper function of a DVR.
