Yes. But you can change channels via STB only.

I think the best option for watching your dishtv on PC is through VGA Box offered by dishtv. which is compatible with your PC as well as TV, that is you can use them in your PC and when your you can connect it to tv and able to all channels as per your package

Just visit this link for more info on this. VGA BOX.
VGA Box: Video Graphics Array (VGA)

The normal STB from dishTV does not provide USB streaming. What it provides is RGB Composite output (RCA terminals). This is an analog signal. You can use any A-to-D converter to convert these signals to digital and then record them on your PC. However there is a problem. Most A2D converters capture the AV signals in AVI format. This is done to retain as much AV information as possible. A 5 minute video will result in 1 GB file.

Later on you can use encoders to convert AVI file to MPEG-1 (VCD quality) or MPEG-2 (DVD quality). The most popular converter is TMPGEnc. To make a VCD you need software such as VCDEasy and to make DVD you will need a DVD authoring software such as TMPG DVD Author.

There is a much easier option than all this - you can buy a HD recorder and directly burn the content into DVD. I believe that HD recorders are available from Sony, LG and Samsung.

I have converted many home videos into DVD using TMPGEnc and TMPG DVD Author.
i have read it. Can u tell me that wat is the price of A-D converter along with its manufacturer.

Should i go for VGA STB or an A - D Converter???

A-D converter is more versatile and hence consider that. Check prices on eBay.

But is it really worth this cost and effort? What do you wish to record anyway? If you wish to make content, there are better options such as DVR. But note that you can sell this content for profit.

As you said you have already got a tv tuner card in your pc I dont think you need anything else... Just need media centre edition windows and may be there are adons available and you can record anything you want on your hard drive and can also set timers and all that.

I am nmot an expert on this so please take my suggestion with a pinch of salt

I completely missed out on the TV tuner card.

Does the TV tunerd have analog composite RCA input - Yellow-White-Red RCA pins? If yes, use a RCA video cable from Kaon to tuner card.

Kaon STB also has a TV RF out. Use this to connect to the tuner card's BNC input.

You can record by using capture programs like WinDV or ULead VideoStudio, etc.

As long as you can see the TV picture and sound on your computer, you do not need anything else.

    I did it!!!

    Ok heres what I did:

    1) As Mentioned Above, you have to get a Composite to S-video Converter
(I got one with my video card)

    2) Connect one end of the yellow plug of the RCA cable into the back of your set top box (into yellow of course) and the other end of the cable into the converter (as shown above) and then plug the converter in to the S-Video in of your TV Tuner Card

    3) OK! Thats the Video taken care of, now you have to get an RCA Audio to 3.5mm jack cable:

You will also need an RCA Coupler for this step (pictured below)

Connect the red and white plugs to the back of your set top box and then the 3.5 mm plug to the LINE IN of your sound card

(in the above picture of a typical sound card, the line in jack is marked with the red arrow [blue port])

After doing this you have to go the settings page of your sound card and ENABLE/UNMUTE the LINE IN/INPUT MONITOR.

    4) Thats it!!! You can now view your STB on your PC with great sound and video!!

I would recommend the following programs to manipulate your TV Card

    1) KastorTV (OpenSource, Freeware) - K!TV | Logiciel TV - TV Software
    2) ChrisTV Lite (Freeware, but professional version is shareware) - ChrisTV - The PVR that TAKES control OVER Your TV Card - developed by Chris P.C. srl for TV Cards with MPEG2 Hardware Encoding

    Have a Great Day !!

P.S. - Converting the RCA signal into RF(with modulator) and then plugging it in to your TV Card doesn't help, well, It doesn't for me anyway....

EDIT:No need to remind you that if your TV Card has RCA input (pictured below) then simply plug the RCA cable into your STB into your TV Card......

(Example Pictured Above is Hauppauge WinTV - PVR - 150)

So make sure you buy one like this the next time you go out shopping for a TV tuner card, or you have to go through the hassles above.

Good work. I have done that already. I have a Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge which is an external A-to-D and D-to-A converter. It connects to the PC wire 1394/Firewire port.
