Rep Power: 1 | For the last couple of days their is lots of talks about MPEG2 and MPEG 4, i have read some of the articles in other forums as well where every body talks about MPEG 4 and say its a better technology. I have done some research on that and read some articles on MPEG4 on the net itself and found that : -- Their is no difference in Audio and video quality in both the technologies and that the reason most of the DTH players in the world (more then 80%) are using mpeg2. -- New DTH players are using MPEG 4 technology to accomodate more no of channels on their platform as it takes less bandwith and it only helps broadcasters not to general consumer......because with MPEG 4 BOX the total cost of the box increase very much and at the end, it effects to normal customers by end up paying more money for the same quality as they were getting with MPEG 2. reading taken from wikipedia. |

Rep Power: 5 | Ditto. Even if the additional cost of MPEG4 STB is not passed to the subscriber, there is still no benefit to the customer. So decision should be based on quality and quantity (number of channels and price there of). However, when HD comes into play, broadcasters on MPEG2 will be forced to move to MPEG4 to keep the cost down. However, that is still some distance away.

Because of MPEG4, broadcaster will be able to cram in more channels per satellite transponder. Hence it is a lower cost to them. Now if they decided to pass on (part of) the benefit to the cunsumers, that would be great. They shpuld also try to keep the CPE cost same as with other vendor. Then they would make a killing. | |
