Default Help choose the internet type

    Hello Experts,
I am currently residing in US and will be temporarily visiting the family in Gujarat. I would like to know what is the most reliable way to get an internet access to my Toshiba Satellite laptop?
I want the internet connection so that I can remotely work using VPN from my laptop.
My places will keep changing as I will visit several places during my visit.

Is there any wireless data card available by any of the providers? and if it is available, what are the prices?
I will hardly need 2.0 MBPS down and 500kbps up speed or even lesser than that should be fine.

I have read good things about the BSNL in some of the threads. Can somebody give me some ideas about how can I get consistent internet access?

wireless data cards are available in india.
two service providers are providing it.
    1.Relaiance Reliance Communications.
2.Tata Indicom Tata Indicom : Wireless Internet, Wireless Phones & USB Modem
the tariffs are clearly in the website itself.

I am afraid that no one provides the speed that match your requirement when it comes to wireless data card.

but i know one thing, some hot spots like airport and malls in india got wifi installed, that may give you this bandwidth.

    Thank you my dear friend..
So I think wireless data card is not probably my choice..
The thing is I will be working night hours mostly in India so using hotsposts at mall and other places is also not an option.

So my next question is is there good pre-paid internet plan available that I can use at my home city Baroda? Is it going to be DSL or something else? If it is DSL, will I be charged for minute uses on my telephone line? I know that in our home, only some calls are free per month and then you will be charged per minute or per call basis (I am not sure how it is). But I think we have a BSNL landline at home.

I really need reliable internet connection OR I know that I can screw things up easily by not logging into company's network.

Please..please..... I am completely unaware of recent ISP world in India.

Please refer to the following pages:
    BSNL Internet Connect Card (ICC)

    And,

    BSNL Data Card Site

for details about the facilities provided by BSNL.
    Hope that helped.

yes here we have DSL and broadband too.

both providers offer your speed requirements.

you said you have BSNL phone.
so you can go for BSNL broadband.
its ranging from 256 Kbps to 2 Mbps for home.
its a post paid service not a prepaid one.

But installation takes a week or couple, to get installed.
so preplan and get your broadband installed when you reach there.

there is another broadband provider airtel
they also provide the same speed range.
installation is quick.but not sure about the reliability of the speed.

But in my opinion if the BSNL broadband is installed with out any problem of noise or something like that kind of issues, it would be reliable and fast than airtel.

yes dhanesh, he also hinted about the bsnl phone. so he might consider the wired option too.

    Dear prasannaganesh!
Andy had asked about a wireless setup, and not the ones you are talking about.

    Yes.
    But, its mainly for businessmen.
You can carry a USB device they give around and connect to internet from anywhere (where there is range for BSNL).
I'm not sure of its tariff.

    Dear Friends,
from all the opinions, I think I am coming to the conclusion that mobile internet is not an option as it can't be trusted and in addition, it is slower for the VPN use. I will probably go for the BSNL wired connection and I will ask my brother to start the procedure now to get the broadband so that it is available by the time I reach there. Only the problem now will be that I will have to return back to Baroda every night so that I can work during the night time OR I can visit limited places where there is a reliable internet connection.

Please keep posting any good experience with any other providers OR with wireless cards.
    Thansk a million..

About wireless, my friend use tata indicom surf. its quite reliable and best for emails.
but the speed is around 160 Kbps.
So based on the requirement, you choose the provider.
In Broadband Airtel is also providing the service.
