    Default Laptop & internet!

i recently bought a new laptop and i want to connect it to internet, i am already a customer of BSNL dataone (desktop), i am able to connect my laptop to internet through datone router, now my problem is, i want a wireless connection, i mean independent of the existing connection that i have,so that i can connect anytime (read incase of loadshedding) and preferably a wireless one and with a speed of 256kbps.
    OR
Can i connect my laptop to internet during loadshedding hours to my existing connection with the help of some special type of routers (as router shuts when power goes off); if so which one(router)

any ideas/suggestions, how to remain connected.

    eagerly waiting for ur replies/suggestions.

Any modem/router that requires external power will shut off during electrical outages.

    I have two suggestions:

    a) Invest in a good power backup solution for your home. A 4 hr. power backup will cost to the tune of 20K (I think, I am not 100% sure).
    OR
    b) You can buy a USB or PCMCIA data card from Reliance or Tata Indicom. The speed is not great - 144 kbps (18 kB/s), and it is meant for surfing/e-mail only.

a)---> i have powerback up, but i can't operate my pc for 2hrs continuous

    b) ---> thats a good idea, but here speed (i need 256kbps) is the constraint.

That is no solution. Remember that min 256 kbps is wanted.

I have another suggestion for you

Instead of running your desktop when power is gone all you need to do is plug in your router and moden into your ups and run your laptop on your laptop's battries which should ideally last for more then two and a half hours as you said its a new laptop.
In my opinion your ups alone should keep your modem and router running for more then an hour or so if the battries ar in good shape and even two hours if its a large battrey.

If you have an inverter at home even if its single battery then you can use inverter's power to power up your modem and router and both of them put together dont use more electricity then a small bulb say 20-30 watts at the most if I am not wrong ( some one please correct me if I am wrong)

This way you should be able to stay online for as long as your laptop's battery lasts and even longer if you plug in your laptops charger to your inverter's power as a laptop's charger is normally 60-80 watts which is not a lot even for a n inverter with a single battery.

If staying online is very important for you and is productive enough for you to spend some money on it then I suggest you get an inverter with 3-4 exide tubular batteries and you would never have to worry about back up again... not atleast for the next 4 years or so as those battries last more then 4 years.

this is exactly what I do. I have a single battery inverter so I just use ups to power the modem and router and use it with laptop

good solution ... i always keep my modem/router connected to ups .. it also serves another purpose ... due to frequent voltage fluctuations i previously lost one of my modems after this i decided to keep the new one(dlink) always connected via the ups ...

will it not be equally good if we keep the router plugged into the laptop, and the laptop plugged into the inverter??
that way, both the router and the laptop keep getting power..

How will the router get the necessary power? I mean where is the power adapter of the router connected to? Only the data cable is connected with the laptop, right?

It may work on some routers which are self powered by USB ports.

no brother, that cant be done as cool_techie said. what you can do is get a 6 port spikebuster connected from the laptop for small instruments like router/modem/speaker/tv tuner etc etc ... this is the i do it
