Default Help: Russian needs a flat with Internet

    Greetings!

Dear people, I need your opinion and advice.

I've decided to live in India from April until summer and maybe even longer.

I need fast and stable Internet (from 1Mb) for my work in a flat near the shore (maybe Cochin).

But I'm limited in money: I have 30000INR monthly for everything (rent, Internet, food and so on). I'll be living alone.

Can you reccomend me where to seek? Is it possible to rent a flat with already installed broadband for such budget?

    Thank you in advance!

    Artyom,
    Russia

Normally landlords will not rent a flat with telephone and broadband. There are security implications, the details of which I will not go into. I myself refused rental to a potential client because he wanted a flat all ready to move in - he said that he will move in with his suitcases only. Everything else must be available. He was ready to pay top-money but I told him that I will not provide telephone/BB - rather I will help him get it.

I will recommend you BSNL's UL1350+ plan that gives unlimited usage @ 512 kbps. You will get a landline with zero rental with this plan. The charges are as under:

    One time charges:
Installation: rs. 250/- plus 12.36% service tax
Modem purchase: Rs. 1000/- (Type I/III) or Rs. 1600/- (type II/IV)
    Security deposit (refundable): Rs. 1350/-

    Regular monthly charges:
Internet usage: Rs. 1350/- plus 12.36% service tax
Voice: Re. 1 per metered call plus 12.36% service tax

Please visit http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm for more info.

Since you will be living alone, a one bedroom apartment should suffice your purpose or at most 2 bedrooms. I am not from Cochin, but I expect that the rent to be around Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 12,000/-. Food expenses can be managed at Rs. 5000/-, if you do not eat out everyday. Public Transportation is available but could be quite an experience for you. Rs. 30,000 should be sufficient, if one lives well within limits.

I would recommend wireless internet service from Tata Indicom and Reliance. Or else u can opt for BSNL's EVDO service.

    Hi Balgator

Welcome to India and Welcome to the IBF forum .

BSNL would the right choice for you. But I am not sure about the level of service you get in cochin. Airtel is a little expensive but I have heard their service is good.

You might want to check your rent, daily food and travel expense before deciding to jump the gun with the Broadband Plan

    Airtel Plan
    BSNL

cool_techie_tvm is from kerala so he might be able to help you choose an approriate plan.

    Have a great stay

Thank you for immediate replies and goodwill!!

As far as I understand wireless won't suit me simply because I can rent a flat in a place with bad coverage.. Moreover, I can't rely on wireless (un)stability in my work so I think it's better to go broadband.

How long will it usually take in BSNL or Airtel to make everything ready?

It totally depends on the area, I got a BSNL connection two days in chennai, TamilNadu and when I was in Blore I got Airtel in a matter of two days. There are members who have bad epxriences with both providers. Gut feel says Airtel might be faster than BSNL , less red tape to clear .

cool techie what do you say ?

BSNL can provide u with a wireline connection. But it depends upon the efficiency of the employees in the nearest telephone exchange. I have seen BSNL giving away connections within 2 days of applying for it to two months after application date.

Airtel broadband has limited coverage. If u are residing in the city or 2~3 kms from city, Airtel can fix u up with a connection..

Well as I thought it will be rather hard and unpredictable task.. Unfortunately I have only 2 weeks for accomodation and after that my work begins.. So probably it's better to have some wireless while I'm waiting for broadband.

The problem is to find a place with coverage for both And with acceptable quality..

Where it's better to go? Is Cochin a good choice? What are the chances that I'll find what I need there (if I'll do my best)?

Service providers give much importance to Kochi as it is considered as commercial capital of the state. So u can always expect a good QOS in Kochi. Of course u will find what u need in there, but one employee can make your holiday hell !!

Kindly checkout Tata Indicom's wireless offering USB Modem, Wireless Internet Modem & Internet Cards from Tata Indicom

Sorry what do you mean under posting? Is Kochi indivisible city or there are cities in it?

If he means that - I don't know.. I guess any rather safe location will suit me if only there is required coverage..

I am very pleased to see such good response

    Yet one request..

Please, write about 5 cities with the same likelihood of good Internet as in Kochi? Including the North.. To be on the safe side if someone will join me and I'll have to change my destination.

    Thanks :001_rolleyes:

Outside except Delhi, Blore and Mumbai. Maybe some northward of Delhi (Amritsar, Saharanpur).

I've found fellow traveller and he insists on northern stay because of south heat. As I don't limit myself to a certain place and it's funnier to travel in company I can consider this option too..

Thanks everybody for your sincere advices and proposals!

Finally me and my fellow traveller decided to stay in Rishikesh As I found, there are cyber-cafes in budget hotels (256 and even 512) and I can ask staff to make Internet in my room through wire. Let's give a try... If it won't work I am back to Delhi and ask smoothvibes for help
