Rep Power: 9 | TRAI in its present form is nothing but a tooth-less tiger. All companies would continue to offer lower speed plans with a fine print that the plan is not considered as Broadband under TRAI regulations. (check the reliance site about 100 kbps plan) |

| Junior Member | Frankly what TRAI is saying is logical. The world knows india as land of computer genuises and frankly not many people in world know that we are still in land of 256 Kbps. Many ISPs in other countries are going in for even 50 Mbps (BT) On the other hand yes, the telecom companies will face problem to Now I will reply to the quotes point by point in CAPS -------------------------- Changing the definition of broadband will have major ramification for operators if they want to claim subsidy from the Government. MANY SERVICE PROVIDERS IN CITY LIKE MUMBAI ARE OFFERING "UNLIMTED DOWNLOAD AT 300 RS A MONTH" THIS IS 64 Kbps LINE. NOW CONSIDER THE PRICE MTNL 1 Mbps AT RS 1600 DOWNLOAD SPEED ABT 100 KBPS (BYTES) THE CABLE OPERATORS 64 Kbps AT RS 300 DOWNLOAD SPEED ABT 8 KBPS SO THE DIFFFERECE IS 12.5 IN TERMS OF SPEED (MTNL IS 12.5 TIMES FASTER) SO MULTIPLYING 300 X 12.5 = THATS ABT 3750, THUS EVEN IF AN ISP TAKES 1 MBPS LINE FROM MTNL AT 1600 AND USES THIS IDEA IT CAN MAKE 3750 THATS ABT 2150 PROFIT, MORE THAN 100% MOST ISPS ARE USED TO SUCKING OUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. ITS NOT THAT INTERNET HAS JUST STARTED IN INDIA, INTERNET STARTED IN INDIA WAY BACK IN 1996, AND CABLE INTERNET IS THERE FOR TOO LONG TOO, BUT THE ISPS ARE SO USED TO SUCKING OFF THE CUSTOMER THAT THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO LET GO LIKE A BED BUG COS IF THE GOVT MAKES IT MANDATORY THEN AS PER THE RATE THE CABLE PEOPLE HAVE TO CHARGE ALMOST 25 TIMES MORE PRICE THAN THEIR PRESENT PRICE 64 Kbps TO 2 Mbps = 300 X 25 = 7500, YOU THINK ANYONE WUD PAY THEM THAT? I ALSO THINK THAT THE GOVT SHOULD CLEARLY DEFINE AND PUT A STATUTORY WARNING (LIKE ON CIGARETTE PACKS) ON WHAT THE CUSTOMER IS GETTING PLANS ABOVE 2 Mbps SHOULD BE BROADBAND AND BELOW 2 Mbps SHOULD BE CALLED SIMPLE LOW SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION. THERE SHOULD BE A CLEAR DEMARKATION OF SPEED AND THE ISP SHOULD ACCEPT THAT THE SPEEDS ARE NOT BROADBAND SPEEDS AS DEFINED BY TRAI AND SHOULD BE HIGHLIGHTED, If offering a minimum of 2Mbps speed is made mandatory, operators will have to ramp up their network. THEY ARE SO MUCH USED TO SUCKING UP THE CUSTOMERS THAT THEY KEPT THEIR NETWORK SAME AND JUST INCREASED THE CUSTOMERS AND SO THE CUSTOMERS WHO EARLIER WERE GETTING GOOD SPEEDS AND SUGGESTING THE SAME TO OTHERS ARE NOW THE ONES WHO ARE COMPLAINGING, SO IN TIME, THE ISPS HAVE MADE MORE CUSTOMERS BUT NEVER ACTUALLY WENT ON TO IMPROVING AND EXPANDING THEIR FACILITIES.. MILKING THE COW “We do not think it is feasible to move from 256 kbps to 2Mbps in one shot. If at all the definition has to be revised then they should move to 512kbps, otherwise it will be too costly for both operators and subscribers,” said a GSM player. WHAT THEY SAY IS UNTRUE, IF THEY COME WITH PROSPECT OF BEING BANNED OR THEIR SERVICE CLOSED, THEY WOULD DO IT, THE GOVT DID SAME FOR MOBILE PHONES FOR INCOMING CALLS 16.40 -- > 8.20 --> 4.10 --> 1.00 --> FREE INCOMING PER MIN THEY DID COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LOSS OF REVENUES EVEN THEN TOO. DRASTIC TIMES CALLS FOR DRASTIC MEASURES.. SO IF TRAI DOES NOT TAKE THESE STEPS THEN TILL 2015 WE MIGHT STILL HAVE 64 Kbps NET SPEEDS. AND THERE WOULD BE PEOPLE HAPPY WITH IT AND CABLE OPERATOR HAPPY TO MILK THIS COW. However, the WiMax industry is backing the proposal. According to WiMax players, the technology will enable operators to offer more than 2Mbps of wireless broadband services. SURE THEY HAVE THE ADVANTAGE AS OF NOW, BUT WIMAX IS STILL NEW IN INDIA AND WILL TAKE TIME ALSO I WOULD SUGGEST THE GOVT TO EVEN FINE THE ISPS FOR NOT BEING IN LINE MOST ISPS PROMISE SPEEDS TILL THEIR NODES LIKE MTNL SAYS 2 Mbps TILL OUR NODE, MY QUESTION IS WHO DOES THE WIRING? MTNL AND SURE IT IS TAKEN IN BILL TOO RS 300 WIRING CHARGES. SO FROM THE EXCHANGE TO YOUR HOME WHO DOES THE WIRING? THE ISP (MTNL IN MY CASE) SO WHY SHOULD THE SPEEED BE ASSURED TILL THEIR NODE (EXCHANGE) WOULD THEY GO TO TAKE A CHEQUE IF I KEPT IT ON "MY NODE" SOMEWHERE ON THE CITY? SO MY SUGGESTION IS SINCE THE ISP DOES THE WIRING FROM THEIR FACILITY TO THE CUSTOMERS PREMISES, THEY SHOULD ASSURE THE SPEEDS TILL CUSTOMERS PREMISES. AS THE CUSTOMER DOES NOT MESS WITH WIRES AT THE EXCHANGE OR JUNCTION BOX OR THE WIRING,, ELSE USERS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BRING THEIR COMPUTERS TO THE ISPS NODE AND USE THEM THERE (AS THERE IS WHERE THE SPEEDS ARE GUARANTEED) AND THE ELECTRICITY COST OF USING THE MACHINES TO THE COST OF THE ISP ONLY AS IT IS THEIR ASSURANCE OF SPEED. |
