Default Name a few most touching moments of a movie

Hollywood or Bollywood or Regional or Foreign film.

My favourite touching moments (I am not sure whether I cried or not but my throat really ached).

a) Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. The scene where Sophie has to take a decision at Auschwitz camp in front of the officer. Sophie has to take a decision on which of her child will live and which one will be sent to the gas chamber. Her melancholy replies of "You decide for me. I can't decide that." has no effect on the German. He finally tells her that both will dies. So she cries out, "Take my little girl." Sophie watches as the screaming little girl is carried away to die, her guilt and despair all too clear.

b) Balraj Sahani in Do Bheega Zameen. Balraj Sahani as Shambhu has pledged his land for a loan. A new factory will now be constructed on his land. Desperate to save his do bheega's (two acres) of land, he takes to manual hard labour in Kolkatta and toils hard as a rickshaw puller. In spite of Shmabhu's righteousness and hard work, he fails to pay his debt. His land is taken away. Shambhu, his wife and son, return to the village and through the newly constructed fence's gate watch the construction of the factory go on. He kneels down and collects a fistful of the soil of his ancestral land. A guard sees this and runs to him shouting, 'Hey, you! Stop! What are you taking?'. Shambhu open his fist and the soil slips out of his fist (just as the land slipped from his grasp when he was almost ready to repay the debt). The movie ends here.

I like many such scenes but one thing that jumps
to my mind right now is from the movie Gandhi.

Gandhi and his group are traveling and they stop
by a river to refresh. He is crouching on the river bank
and notices a woman on the other bank with a child.
Her clothes are all torn. She sees Gandhi watching her
and becomes very shy. Gandhi slowly removes his
turban and lets it float on the river. It reaches the
woman on the other shore, she picks it up and
covers her child and herself and looks at Gandhi
thankfully.

that was my favourite scene in the entire movie.

Here are the two scenes which really touched me. Just to see these scenes I can watch the movies again & again.

Kal Ho Na Ho:
When Preity Zinta comes to know about the "6 Din ladiki in" plan of SRK & Saif. & she gets upset/angry (whatever) & goes away. That time SRK takes a dairy from Saif's jacket & starts reading from it.What ever SRK says is actually his feelings for Preity Zinta, there was nothing written in the dairy, its blank.

I just loved that scene.....

Lakshya:
Hrithik calls Preity Zinta (I forgot y....). He says that now graduated from the army academy & even she says that she has been promoted. Both congratulate each other. Then Preity Zinta says that 'we should meet'. Hrithik says in reply that 'you can't take all the decisions'. then again Hrithik says that 'you decided that we won't meet, now I will decided whether we should meet or not'...

Now thats what I call Attitude...
Same such incident happened in my life also...

1) pearl harbor - just after the attack on pearl harbor, the scenes in the hospital. the chaos, injured people (badly injured) ... all actors were superb. i cannot explain such scenes in words properly but anyone who have seen this movie would understand what i mean.

2) tum bin - the climax scene - shekhar talking on phone with piya - confessing his sins by means of the poem - 'tum bin jiya jaaye kaise ... kaise jiya jaaye tum bin ....... ' and the accident

3) rang de basanti - candle light protest scene with the song 'khoon chala'

4) the shawshank redemption - the death of the old librarian prisoner

5) kal ho naa ho - the scene where this conversation takes place:
saif ali khan to shahrukh - tum meri jagah hote to kya karte ...
shahrukh - kaash.... kaash ke main tumhari jagah hota

6) kabhi alvida na kehna - the scene where shahrukh gives rose to rani - very touching expressions indeed

7) lage raho munna bhai - when sanjay dutt apologizes to circuit for slapping him

8) titanic - entire movie is touching ... 'u jump - i jump .. rite?'

9) border - ending scenes with the song 'mere dushman mere bhai' by hariharan

10) taare zameen par - when ishaan's parents were going back after leaving him in hostel

11) the cindrella man - many moments are touching in the movie

12) a beautiful mind - john nash's(russel crowe) noble prize winning speech

there are lot more such moments in my list ... plz comment on the scenes i mentioned. it would be nice to know what others feel about the scenes which i felt most touching and emotional

Quite a lot of scenes, saurav. All are very special moments. But did all those scenes really bring a lump to your throat? Importantly, will you remember these scenes, say, 20 years later?

I am requesting scenes that made a real profound impact - something that you may never forget in your life.

This comment applies to Rameshjee also.

The scene from Lakshya which I had mentioned, happened in my life also...

Both the scennes I mentioned really touched my heart. If I was in the Hero's place I would have done the same...even after 50 years I would remember those 2 scenes....

opinions differ. intellect level differs. maybe these scenes are not special for everyone but these scenes mean a lot to me. there are lot more of them. but i did not want to make my post much long. i am a big movie buff as i posted in my introduction thread. i watch movies very seriously and passionately and end up watching a 2hr movie in almost 3-4 hrs. i pause scenes which i dont clearly understand or which i really like and watch them again. i cannot say about the impact after 20 years ... but some of the movies i listed are 10-15 years old.

for example - if you manage some time from your busy life i recommend you to watch "the shawshank redemption" once ...of course if only you havent watched it already.

these scenes mean a lot to me ... and i definitely will remember these for long long time. may be my list is a bit long because i am very emotional by nature.

I was not challenging - merely asking. The intention of the thread was to list movies that have had profound emotional impact on self. The list can be as long as one wishes.

Some of the movies may be and are indeed 15 years old. But that does not mean that you saw them 15 years ago. For example, Do Bheega Zameen was made way before I or anyone of us (regulars) was born.

p/s. Yes, I have seen Shawshank Redemption. I have it in my collection.

a bit offtopic maybe: so, does shawshank redemption gets any place from you in the all-time top movies list ... like top5 or top10... ?

i also took your post in the right spirit. no question of challenging here .

maybe i cannot explain the scenes in words so neatly .... my english is not very good specially when it comes to express emotions ... i am trying to learn how to express in words and this forum is helping a lot.

Shawshank Redemption will definitely rank in the first 10, if not first 5.

I have so many movies. I hate to rank them for fear of doing injustice.

But Casablanca is on top of my list.

wow, good topic for discussion.

here are two from me:

Forrest Gump - Several such scenes in this movie! One of the ones that I'll always remember (besides, of course, Forrest at Jenny's grave) is the following dialogue between Forrest & Jenny close to the end of the film:

F: ...It was like just before the sun goes to bed down on the bayou. There was always a million sparkles on the water... like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny, it looked like there were two skies one on top of the other. And then in the desert, when the sun comes up, I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began. It was so beautiful.
J: I wish I could've been there with you.
F: You were.

Schindler's List - One of the last scenes in which Schindler is saying goodbye to his Jewish friends and then starts thinking to himself that if he had not 'greedily' kept his possessions such as the car, etc., they could have been used to save more lives during the Holocaust.

Don't know how did I miss this thread...

My favorite touching moments of movies is...

Scent of a woman : I love this movie for the powerpack performance by Al Pacino. The speech that he delivers at the school in order to defend innocent Charlie is my all time favorite. Oh I've watched this movie so many times and would love to watch it zillions of times again without getting bored. I'd like to quote a conversation between the dean and Al Pacino.

Principal : Are you finished Mr. Salde?
Al Pacino : No... I am just getting warmed up.

and the ensuing speech.......

1.Gattaca When at last both brother Swimming Race to see who get ahead. Among whom a bro was born not to be successful according to genetics & had done forgery of his genetic test. And his bro want to arrest him by showing he is inferior.
Jerome swims away a second time. Anton is forced to follow
once again. Angry now, gritting his teeth, Anton calls
upon the same determination we have witnessed during his
constant swimming in the pool. He puts on a spurt, slowly
reeling in Jerome.

Anton gradually draws alongside Jerome, certain that this effort
will demoralize his older brother. But Jerome has been foxing -
waiting for him to catch up. Jerome smiles at Anton. With
almost a trace of sympathy, he forges ahead again. Anton is
forced to go with him. They swim again for a long distance.

It is Anton who gradually becomes demoralized - his strokes
weaken, his will draining away. Anton pulls up, exhausted and
fearful. Jerome also pulls up. However his face displays none
of Anton's anxiety.

They tread water several yards apart. The ocean is choppier
now. The view of the lights on the shore is obscured by the
peaks of the waves.

ANTON
(panic starting to show)
Vincent, where's the shore? We're too far out.
We have to go back!

JEROME
(calling back)
Too late for that. We're closer to the other side.

Anton looks towards the empty horizon.

ANTON
What other side? How far do you want to go?!
Do you want to drown us both?
(becoming hysterical)
How are we going to get back?!

Jerome merely smiles back at his younger brother, a disturbingly
serene smile.

JEROME
(eerily calm)
You wanted to know how I did it. That's
how I did it, Anton. I never saved anything
for the swim back.

Anton stares at Jerome, aghast. The two men face each other in
silence, treading water several yards apart in the dark, rolling
ocean.

Jerome turns and heads back towards the shore. Anton is left
alone with the terrifying realization. The only sound, the wind
and the water.

2.Gattaca: JEROME
(as he urinates)
Just remember, Lamar, I could have gone up
and back and nobody would have been the wiser--

LAMAR
(cutting him off)
--Unfortunately my son's not all that they // by genetic manipulation
promised. But then, who know what he could do.

Lamar takes the cup from Jerome in his gloved hand. Jerome
anxiously watches his sample poured into the analyzer.

Confirming Jerome's worst fears, the face of 20-YEAR-OLD VINCENT
appears on the computer screen. However Lamar does not look at
the screen. He stares Jerome in the eye.

LAMAR
For future reference--
(a brief glance to where
Jerome has just zipped his fly)
--righthanded men don't hold it with their
left. It's just one of those things.

Never lookig at the screen, Lamar presses a button marked,
"VALID".

LAMAR
(knowing smile)
Have a safe trip, Vincent.

3. Gattaca In a few short years, scientists will
have completed the Human Genome Project,
the mapping of all the genes that make
up a human being.

After 4 billion years of evolution by the
slow and clumsy method of natural selection,
we have now evolved to the point where we
can direct our own evolution.

The first title is replaced in the heavens by a second title.

If only we had aquired this knowledge
sooner, the following people would never
have been born:

A succession of portraits and photographs of RENOWNED and
HISTORIC FIGURES fades in and out of the constellations - the
accompanying titles list their affliction rather than their
accomplishments.

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

COLETTE

1. Forest Gump: when Jenny (his only best friend and love) decided to live him. Being a mentally retarded man, he didn't understand why, but he was really sad. The way he expressed his sadness is really touching and made most people in the theater (including me LOL) crying.
2. Independence Day: when the US President delievered his speech before they counter attacking the aliens.

Shocks, you're right about that. Indeed that is touching. I've watched Gandhi and remembered this scene. I really love it. There are many touching part of the movie but I put this one on the top. Great pick.
