    Default Lighting in the Home

Lighting is something very important in the home, and i think every room needs it sufficient amount of lighting, whether in the form of tube lights, bulbs, lamps o anything else.

A study area should always be bright especially if using a computer.

A living room/drawing should have a medium amount of lighting not too much and not less.

Bedrooms should also have a medium amount of light, but with the dressing table there should always be more light.

But there should not be two rooms where light is bright and one room where it is dull, so that you dont go from a dark room to a bright room, as it can affect your eye sight.

I wonder how I missed this thread for so long.... Thats very nifty information Preeti... Lighting should be a prominent priority when designing and decorating our home... Apart from artificial means, we should also give importance to natural sun light for home lighting...

Natural light stay off from the other light sources as natural light is the only one that freshen our rooms and which comes to us with no cost at all... Sunlight passing through our rooms makes our home bright, fresh and healthy as sunlight has the ability to fight dirt and bacterias... Sunlight is brighter than any other light sources, thus when making our house we can exploit the multiple advantages of sunlight with a little effort and care...

To use maximum of the natural light we can keep blinds or shades open during the day... It is a fact that day light makes us alert... Therefore we can let our study room or office room to be filled with the freshness of sunlight... When there is ample sunlight available we can save electricity by not relying on electrical bulbs and instead going for the day light...

But obviously, natural lighting should not be used as the major lighting for our home... There should be enough alternatives as suggested by Preeti to brighten our home in seasons when sunlight is rarely available... Other than helping to light your rooms sunlight also play a vital role in decorating our rooms... Sunlight passing through the rooms will give indoor plants a new freshness and life...

Sunlight does nt have the ability to fight dirt and bacteria
it just inhibits the growth of micro organisms i.e prevents growth

and for dirt ? only vacuum cleaner will help ....

    @Preeti
I had no idea about all this info ??.... I thought each room should have soft as well as Bright lighting options ..... Thats how my home is designed ... i mean i use bright lights during working .... soft/dim lights while watching movies listening to music etc

I am no expert in this though

Yeah... Thats what I meant... It prevents growth....

lol...Thats right... But everybody don't use vacuum cleaners even if they own one... and dirt can be spotted better in sunlight than normal artificial light... Hence for manual cleaning, sunlight in a room is great help... Thats why people(who have time) prefer to clean their home during day time rather than at night... Ofcourse sunlight don't clean dirt itself...

One more thing... Natural sunlight provides Vitamin D to us...

Well its something which i think should apply to rooms in regards to lighting, its nothing as a rule!

Like ItsmeMad mentioned sunlight is very important so its good to get as much as that during the day in your home, and there is nothing as good as sunlight, which is natural, bright, makes the atmosphere better and good for health!

at night i use night bulb sometimes but most of the time i don't use any tube light or bulb in room as in day time i keep window open and at night i use dim light bulb

I know lighting is important to give a different look to room but in bottom line it is something like wasting energy/electricity.

This thread just reminded me to put the lights ON...

BTW smoothie its better to waste little electricity to save your eyes... Else don't use computer too(in dim light)... That will save more energy.... :001_tt2:

It doesnt matter what kind of light you use, as long as your using some kind of appropriate light when using the computer and preventing your eyes from getting strained!

And regarding energy i agree with Mad on this, i would rather use energy than ruin my eyes, and in a way your not wasting it your using the light, wasting would be leaving the light on in a room when no one is in the room!

CFL lamps will be the best choice. It is soft on your eyes and saves a lot of energy. If you like to specific, you can choose branded ones.

I agree with maddy, sunlight is the best thing if you can get it.

Somehow my experience with CFL has not been too good:

    a) All my CFL bulbs (branded, imported or cheap Chinese) never lasted more than a year.
    b) In fact the unbranded Chinese CFL lasted longer than Philips, GE, Sylvania Laxman, etc.
    c) My house bedrooms are big (14x16, 14x12, 15x10) and one CFL never seems to lit up the room brightly. Hence I had to use two (2 x 18W). This is same as one tubelight and the tube light gives much more light/brightness.

In fact, I would recommend that you replace all bulbls/CFL/tubelights with electronic choke tubelights. I purchased another flat (in 2004) and I have installed all tubes with electronic chokes. This gives the following advantage:

    a) An ordinary TL with coil choke consumes nearly 60W (36~40W for tube and 20~25W for choke).
    b) A standard coil choke emits dark smoke in tiny amounts that blackens the wall near it.
    c) Such a choke makes an irritating humming noise that progressively gets louder with age.

The electronic choke eliminates all these issues. I am now in the process of replacing my existing home TLs with electronic chokes. The electronic choke TL is also much more slimmer and looks cute.
*** Never argue with an idiot. ***

Tubelights with electronic chokes can use the same tube but their base assembly is different.

Now electronic tubelights have come with ultra slim tubes also - these are no more than a 1 cm in diameter.
