    Post Sheesha - Hookahs...!

    History of Sheesha's:

The origins of sheesha or hookah (as its popularly known) come from the north western provinces of India along the border of Pakistan in Rajasthan and Gujarat nearly a millennium ago. These hookahs were simple, primitive, and rugged in design, usually made from a coconut shell base and tube with a head attached. They were designed to smoke opium and hashish. These hookah made its way through the Persian Kingdom, which also included Pakistan, Afghanistan, cities of Middle Asia and Arab parts of Northern Africa. The hookah acquired tombeik on its way through Persia. Tombeik is a dark tobacco grown in modern day Iran. Tombeik is rinsed and packed in the large older style heads where hot coal is applied directly to the wet tombeik, which gives it a strong flavor. The Sheesha designed in the Persian Empire are still hand crafted with each one being cut from a piece of wood. In the 19th century, cigarettes were made easily available and mostly women smoked the hookah because they were not on the go. Women used this at home for entertainment and as a past time.

    Whereas some state that:
Hookah was originated in India n was called Nargile. If translated in English, Nargile means coconut, exactly wat hookah was made from - coconut shells. The Nargiles were simple, primitive, and rugged in design. Its popularity spread to Iran and then the Arab world and Turkey. However, it was in Turkey - in around 16th century - that hookah was developed and advanced close to what it looks like today. This was mainly for the fact that the Hookah was more popular among the upper class and the rugged design had to change.

Sheesha gained its main popularity in Turkey coffee shops. A hookah bar waiter was treated as a chef as its preparation was complex and had to be done carefully.

Hookah culture then migrated to other Middle Eastern countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirate, Morocco and around. It was known as different names in different countries:

    Saudi Arabia - Hubble Bubble
    Egypt & Morocco - Shisha
    Lebanon & Syria - Argile
    Iran - Ghelyoon

Now in order to smoke the hookah there are some steps that must be taken in preparation. Following is de instruction as how to prepare a hookah.

Before you start the following steps, wash your hookah thoroughly. This gets the old tobacco smell and dirt (specially coal ashes) out. Don’t ever use the old water in the vase.

    1. Fill the vase with cold water
    2. Place de middle section in place
    3. Place de tray on the argile.
    4. Put dehose on the hookah
    5. Pack the bowl with flavor
    6. Place the aluminum foil on top of the bowl
    7. Put holes in the aluminum foil
    8. Light coals and put them on the hookah head (magic coals r the best ones)
    9. Smoke the hookah

When buying the flavour it is usually in a clear plastic pouch or bag and moist to the touch. Most hookah tobaccos are based on fruit flavors and extracts.

Hookah is now a very popular smoking thingy used all across the globe with a misconception that it is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes.

I personally smoke sheesha's at home & make them....! also i go to couple of lounges... It is similar to coffee places as to sit there n pass ur time with frens....mostly...!!! A person can smoke these Hookahs for upto 1.5 min...it varies as per the flavoured kept in it...! Most Important....pls use filters while smoking a sheesha....

Some of the famous places in West India for Hookahs are - MOCHAS, Mr. Beans....

I personally feel that sheesha once in a way is fine....but it is very addictive...! I ve got frens who r totally addicted to hookahs....n r now ving a hard time to give it up...! Obviously, excess of intake is harmful.....

    Your Say.....peeps....?

We have flavored hookahs available at many places in Pune... And my non-smoker friends used to order them very frequently... I was amused by their curiosity/excitement to smoke hookah(I was a smoker then)... But I was not a big fan of it... as it never gave me the satisfaction of cigs...

But now since I've left smoking cigs. since quite some time... I might give it another try when I go to any joint to understand the psych of a non-smoker...

hooka's are good if you get the good tobacco and it is mixed and fixed properly, in delhi you can get good hooka at village cafe in SDA

I tried hooka's in some cafe's around but honestly can not get the taste of real hooka anywhere out. I got one good kashmiri hooka which works really good but don't have that one here in delhi may be will carry it back to delhi very soon

found a good pic to explain a basic hooka

Naah... its not dangerous like cigs... Man cigs. are on 5th position in terms of harmfulness... Filter in Hookas is water... Which is certainly better than filter of cigs... (If tobacco quality is standard in both)...

Harmless or not where can you smoke a hookah apart from your own home? As per the new law smoking is banned in all public places. This includes hookah's in Pub's/Other joints etc
Anyways have a small hookah at home, used it to smoke grass earlier..gets pretty strong sometimes :devil2:
