Default Must eat things in Ahmadabad

    Hi Guys

I am planning to visit Ahmadabad shortly. I have been on this forum for some time now and have heard of many great things that Ahmadabad has to offer. Things like "Fried Icecream" and the person who makes 100 diff types of eggs etc.... I have come to know these things on the forum only. This is my first trip to the city so want to make most of it! Can you please list the things which I MUST EAT when I am in the city and the best places to eat. It would be great !

Ahmedabad is "notoriously" famous for fried things. If you count your calories and worry all the time than this city isn't the place for you.

There are a few places you have to try.
    1) Dalwadas: Made from Udad Dal, available at 2 places:

Gota chaukdi on SG Highway and at Ambica Center near HL commerce college in Navrangpura.

2)Khaman ( refreshingly a non fried item): also popularly known as dhokla in the rest of India. Believe me those two are very different from each other anyway to try both of them, you will need to head to Das's Khaman near Nehrunagar. Its just a few meters away from Nirma circle.

3)Bataka Vada (Vada made from large chips of potatoes and fried) available at Raipur Bhajjiya house near Nehrunagar or The original Raipur Bhajiya house near Raipur Darwaza in the old city.

4)Gujarati Thali: a complete experiece, you'll need to go to Pakwan or Gopi they are both near VS Hospital near Ellisebridge.

    I hope that helps...

PS: Most of the autowallahs know about above mentioned places, so ask them if you have doubts about finding them. If you have your own vehicle than you can always explore on your own.

Thanks a lot. This was very helpfull. About "Khaman" and "Dhokla" , I came to know only a few days back that they were different things. In mumbai especially, "Khaman" is also called "Khaman Dhokla". I have tried "Handvo" at my gujju friend's place, and I think its awesome. Even better than "Dhokla"!. Where can I get really good "Handvo"?

For Handvo: You will need to check out 'Agashiye' near Lal Darwza in the old city or 'Swati' near Law Garden.

I forgot to mention that for a complete experience of great food and a great pseudo rural experience you have to visit 'Rajwadu' near Vejalpur and 'Vishala'(the one with the famous utensil museum) near Sarkhej.

I would digress slightly on Gordhan thaal, while it offers decent food but it is not entirely a Gujarati food experience. Where as the cuisine offered at Gopi near VS Hospital offers very authentic Gujarati and Katiyawadi taste.

I also went to some farsan shops and checked out all those types of farsan. I didn't even know so many types of these even existed.

May I know where exactly did you go?

And yes I agree with Aashka on Vada Pav. Our Vada Pav are so better than the mumbai version. (no offence to mumbaikars). You have to try Vada pav and something called 'Daabeli' (A totally uniqe sandwitch only available in Gujarat, origin: Kutchh) at Jai Bhavani's near Tomatoes at CG road or Shriji Krupa Vada pav center near Vijay cross roads.

I had a lot of those when I was in college. We generally made a short journey to Ruturaj for cutting chai and bun-butter jam.

There is one "havmor" icecream place below pakwan. I though the name "havmor" was seriously funny.

The ice cream available at havmor are top notch. The best ones I have tested are fresh orange, cookie cream and chaupati kulfi!

The chana puri of havmor is very sticky. If you it eat by hand you have to wash your hands with soap and a scrub to get rid off all the sticky fat.

Is it a fast food chain like Nirula's or Icecream brand like Naturals?

    Havmor?

Yeah, its somewhat similar to Nirula's. It offers the best fast food and regular north Indian food at select outlets and also offers very good ice creams in terms of quality at many locations across the state.
