Default Rajasthan temple stampede: 103 killed

    Another heart rendering story:

    Rajasthan temple stampede: 103 killed

One hundred and three people were killed and 29 injured in a stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur on Tuesday, a senior Rajasthan government official said.

The incident took place at the start of Navaratra festival on Tuesday.

The stampede at the temple on a hillock in the famous Jodhpur Fort followed the collapse of a wall near the shrine.

Of the dead, 30 bodies were brought to Mahatma Gandhi [Images] Hospital and 10 were sent to Mathura Das Hospital, Divisional Commissioner Kiran Soni Gupta told PTI.

Officials said the toll could rise.

The devotees in huge numbers, especially women, had gathered at the temple from early on Tuesday morning in view of the Navratra festival starting from today.

Why do such terrible incidents happen only (or mostly) in India? Temples and shrines belong to trusts; most of them are rich; and yet no care is taken to provide good safe passage for devotees - the very same devotees who pay the respects and fill the coffers. Government also does not provide safety at such crowded places.

We dont have well defined health and safety laws and lack of planning makes things even worse.

The wall which fell should have been taken down years ago to avoid such an accident. Chaos is the norm in India and planning in advance is unheard of Things are changing now but it would take years to mend the mistakes of the baburaj weve had all these years.

These things used to happen earlier aswell ... India is a huge country and the population is but and to top it up we have mismanaged everything.

Its just that these incidents get reported these days on news channels. There used to be widespread voilence in rural areas which has kind of stalled for now and things are getting better with a lot of stuff making it to national news channels and some people have started doing their work properly.

The people responsible for managing the crowd there should be sacked instantly and never be given a position in any government department.

Merely highlighting the fact that There is no proffesionalism in the way they do things ... say like conducting a proper ceremony ,controlling the crowd.... giving proper Internet services etc

The fact is that that there is no human value in India, if there was then thing like this would not happen! The death toll has risen to 200 or something now.

If there would be a single bomb blast in some western countries it remains a headline news for weeks, that day is remembered each year but here in India the frequency is set at such a pace that we are used to it.
