Default Does Gandhi's ideals work today ?

    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, 2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948

Does Gandhi's ideals work today ?

On Thursday, it is the 139th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The 'Father of the nation' who had a considerable role to play in the country's Independence movement, was a champion of non-violence.
Gandhi emphasised on morality, non violence, equality and cottage industries. Desperate times, however, call for desperate measures.
Is Gandhi still relevant today? Do his ideals work?

Quite a few (but not all) of his ideals will work. It is Nehru's brand of socialism that does not work.

And you have to read the book I suggested (I am not going to name it again). I really implore everyone.

It was there when I posted the link. The 'Wikipedia Editor' removed the content because the statement is likely to be challenged. And also the statement is from an untrustworthy source. I was planning to quote the content here. Then I thought like 'Wikipedia Editor' and removed the content. Lets not discuss this any further or thing will get messy. :surrender:

Mahatma Gandhi must have something really good else he wouldnt have had so many followers back then... he did appeal to the masses although its a different thing that the masses back then were illetrate and jobless.

Mahatma Gandhi ideology wont really work in todays times... its Jiski Lathi uski bhains sort of thing going on be it anywhere in the world... especially in India.

    Default Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was killed by Nathuram Godse, a hardline member of the right-winged organization known as Hindu Mahasabha.

The Hindu Mahasabha and their followers sought to justify the assassination on the following arguments:
    • Gandhiji supported the idea of a separate state for Muslims. In a sense he was responsible for the creation of Pakistan.
    • In spite of the Pakistani aggression in Kashmir, Gandhiji fasted to compel the government of India to release an amount of Rs. 55 crores due to Pakistan.
    • The belligerence of Muslims was a result of Gandhiji's policy of appeasement.
Many people believe this till today. But truth and perception are quite different most of the times. The seed of discord between the two dominant religious groups of India and idea of a separate state was sown by the British.

The muslim rule in India was established in 1192 when Mohammed Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in the second battle at Tarrain. From that date till Battle of Plassey in 1757, Muslim rule dominated India. Muslims feared repraisal for their misrule during the six centuries, apart from the rule of Akbar and to some extent Jehangir and Sha Jehan when Hindu and Muslims lived in harmony. This fear was fortified by the British.

Gandhiji even offered Jinnah the PM'ship of India but Nehru was determined to be the PM of India and he opposed the plan. Ultimately there was no option but to give in.

The proposal for partition of the country and violent reaction against it generated tensions which ultimately resulted in sectarian killings on a scale unprecedented in human history. For the ethnic Muslims, Gandhiji was a Hindu leader who opposed creation of Pakistan on sectarian grounds. Ethnic Hindus looked upon him as an impediment of their plan to revenge the atrocities on Hindus. Godse was a child of this extremist thinking.

The Hindu backlash was as much responsible for the creation of Pakistan as the sentiments of the ethnic Muslims. The hard core Hindus looked down upon the Muslims as misguided, unclean and came to believe that coexistence with them was not possible. Mutual distrust and recriminations led the extremists among both the groups to regard Hindus and Muslims as different nationalities and this strengthened the Muslim league's demand for partition as the only possible solution to the communal problem.

Vested interests on both the sides stirred up the separatist sentiment and sought to justify their hate - campaign by clever and selective distortion of history.
