'Kashmir part of Pakistan: Nokia'

Quote:
Sores of activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) rampaged a Nokia showroom for showing Kashmir as part of Pakistan's territory in its mobile navigation system.

They barged into a Nokia showroom and snatched mobile phones and burnt them. Besides, they also set hoardings on fire outside the showroom. Dozens of policemen were present when the attack took place.

A BJP leader and a deputy in the state assembly demanded legal action against Nokia.

"Nokia has introduced a software. When we heard about it, then the members of the BJYM protested in front of the Nokia showroom. This is a case of anti-nationalism. We demanded that the Nokia and other people involved in the conspiracy be booked for spreading anti-national activities. We will intensify the protest if this case has not been registered," said Sharad Jain, the BJP legislator.

Nokia's mobile mapping and navigation service, Nokia Maps, allows people to pre-plan their journey at home on their PC and synchronise with their mobile, giving access to pre-planned routes and favourite destinations while on the move.

It also includes high-resolution aerial images and 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps.

"This software is developed by Nokia. This is the problem of Nokia and we are not concerned with it as we are merely shop owners, not the client of the company. But, the manner in which the mob entered and started torching the shop is bad," said Rafiq Khan, the Nokia showroom owner.

Nokia maps show LOC as the international boundary and thats what is printed all over the world... we on the other hand has seen the whole Kashmir including the part ocupied by pakistan as Indian territory.
Its an International norm to print maps according to the actual line of control and there is nothing new about this.

It was a huge shock for me when I saw such maps abroad.

I suppose protest is in good faith and I understand the sentiments of the people who are protesting and I agree to what they are trying to say but this is not the way to protest... File a law suit and Nokia will back down and change it for us.

Rampaging a showroom and setting it on fire? well thats not the right way to protest I guess.

If the Bjp guys plan to come to Jantar mantar and organise a rally against this I would join them as well.

Its sad that some people destroy other people's property to make a statement.

When I saw India's map in Atlases abroad, I too was just as shocked as Admin.

The map of India shows Kashmir minus the left side that is PoK. PoK is shown as part of Pakistan. Similarly, the entire Aksai Chin area (above Ladakh) is shown as part of China.

BJP are fools. They think by creating hooliganisam they can show that they are patriots. If they really want to show patriotism, let them go to the border and beat up the occupying forces and annex the PoK back to India (ditto for Aksai Chin).

Nokia apologises for error in depicting Kashmir as part of Pak

Nokia India has admitted error in showing Kashmir as part of Pakistan's territory in its mobile navigation system and expressed regret for the error.

An e-mailed statement by Nokia India,
Quote:
'Nokia India, deeply regrets an inadvertent error in depicting certain international boundaries in an older version of its maps. This was as a result of a technical error that occurred in merging various map data layers. The error has been identified and corrected earlier this year. Nokia urges all its consumers to upgrade to Maps 2.0 and access the latest version of India maps. Consumers can also update the Maps application and the maps on their device by either accessing the maps website Nokia Europe - Maps - Main or Nokia map Loader or visiting a Nokia Care Center.'
In its statement the firm also added, all India maps on Nokia devices are sourced from Navteq Inc. and its affiliates and subsidiaries. Navteq Inc, (with its affiliates and subsidiaries) has all the necessary approvals for city maps in India as well as all international and coastal boundaries from the Survey of India, the National Survey and Mapping Organisation of the country under the Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India.

Nokia said that it would like to clarify that all India maps on Nokia devices are sourced from Navteq Inc. and its affiliates and subsidiaries. Navteq Inc, (with its affiliates and subsidiaries) has all the necessary approvals for city maps in India as well as all international and coastal boundaries from the Survey of India, the National Survey and Mapping Organisation of the country under the Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India.

While clarifying the issue the company said, it has always been sensitive to political and cultural issues and we take all measures to ensure that the cartographic representation of regions is accurate. Nokia is one of the few handsets manufacturers that provide Government approved maps of India. Nokia remains committed in providing accurate and official map data information to all our users.

Does it really matter if PoK is shown as part of India when it is held and ruled by Pakistan? We can feed our own ego and show it as part of India (in Indian maps) and believe what is not real. The whole world will still show it as part of Pakistan.

Can BJP or any other political party enforce on the world community and show the PoK as part of India? And even if it does, will it change reality?

Check this out ...

And this ...
